We Lost Gary Emory Last Night

I don't have any real details beyond that which our mutual friend Eric Linden (of Auto Foreign Services) posted over on the Early S registry, but we lost Gary last night. Rod put something up on Instagram as well, saying his dad passed peacefully in his arms, surrounded by family. RIP, old friend. Boy are you going to be missed.

It would be hard to over state Gary's influence on the world of Porsche Outlaws. I think it would be fair to say that there wouldn't even be such a thing were it not for Gary. Granted, Gary was a 356 guy through and through, and I'm a 911 guy, but the time I was able to spend with Gary at his place in McMinnville went a long ways towards defining, for me, what my 911 "outlaw" could and should be. He was a huge influence.

Oh, and the good times at his campouts over the years. "Story time with uncle Gary" is how I would tease him as he sat in his big old barber chair, holding court way in the back building. And boy could he spin a yarn... Stopping on our way down to or coming home from various R Gruppe Treffens in California, Gary always had time for us. Or any other time I just happened to be anywhere near his place.

Gary's legacy will live on, of course. Rod has been knocking it out of the park on his 356 builds for many years. My condolences to Rod, Linda (Gary's wife), and the rest of the family.

Thanks for sharing this, Jeff. It was not easy to get going as the 356 community gave pushback that someone would dare modify their precious cars. He stayed true to his vision and was rewarded. Rod carries it forward but Gary was a real character.

Awe man. I only met Gary a few times at the LA Lit Meet but he left an impression. Some friends of mine with a longer history in vintage racing knew him better. Man could that guy light up and hold court in a room of folks. Such a magnetic personality and a legend. RIP.

Never met him. But, I have been to Emory's to dig for parts for my 911SC. Damn. There was just a TON of amazing Porsche cool stuff. That guy certainly made an impact.

Side note: I saw the sheetmetal (fiberglass?) of a Rothman's Paris to Dakar 959 there. That was the wettest of wet dream car from my teen years. And then there were others...

RIP, Gary Emory. You will be missed.

Emory brought a trailer full of cars to Nike one year; the patio in front of the Mia Hamm building was full of cool cars including this brace of Outlaw 356's.

Some of you might recognize the #55.

A few photos from one of the Emory campouts in McMinnville. You never knew what kind of strange and wonderful things you'd find while wandering around the 'compound' - and very little was off limits to the participants. There were lots of beautiful cars in the shops and barns, but there was a huge amount of just fun stuff to see, too.

Sad news...sorry to hear. Memory of a time I took my 911 (invited by 356 friends) on a 356 group winery tour. Neither Gary or I were wine aficionados, so we waited in the winery parking lot, having a beer. Gary was kind enough to remember that every time we crossed paths.

Oh yeah, Cameron's little "Pooper", a Porsche (four cylinder pushrod) powered Cooper. Gary and Rod supported that car in local vintage racing for many years, along with a pretty good smattering of 356's. Cameron still races it, I just saw him at the local Historics over 4th of July weekend.

I love it. Gary drove that darn thing all the way to the Bonneville Salt Flats one year for Speed Week. I can't remember if Rod joined him or if it was one of the grandkids. Plenty of tall tales followed, as you can well imagine.

A great friend and the Porsche OG Outlaw just passed.
Gary Emory, the spirit behind the 356 Outlaw brand and a great Porsche legend will be remembered.
Everyone knows about the 356 Outlaw but how many of you know that Gary and Neil (his dad) were the inspiration behind the Baja Bug.
I was honored to build engines for a few of his legions and his creations will live forever.
I loved Gary and will miss him. Rod will be a great ambassador to the outlaw brand.
