Firearm Deer Season starts now in Michigan

Already heard a couple rifle shots this morning....barely light out. First time since 2014 that it's landed on a Saturday.

It's a mild morning here...55 and breezy. Should be a good start.

We're split into Zones here in Florida, each one starting seasons about 2 weeks after the one prior. Archery started in August up near Pensacola and mid September for my zone, then Muzzle loader was mid October for my zone, and general gun started Nov 1 and runs thru mid January.

A good share of the land around me is owned by the Amish. They get 'block permits' for deer on their land...and I'm sure venison is their most common meal.

I like it....keeps the deer population down around here.

Bumper crop of deer this year, office workforce will be depleted from so many people hunting.

I bet construction sites all over the state go quiet.

I would rather see them on the dinner table instead of inside my bonnet

Two minutes ago as I let my dog out I see a nice buck chasing his girlfriend in my front yard. Easy pickens here except for no firearms allowed to discharge in the city.

Five minutes ago two bucks, one with a small rack, the other a sizable rack were in my backyard getting a drink from the river.

Overcast day, dirty kitchen window and you can barely see them in the pictures - they really blend in.

Gun deer season in Wisconsin is 9 days of Thanksgiving week, from the Saturday before to the Sunday after.

I went to retrieve the horse the other night, and he was at the other end of the pasture, not by the gate like normal. I walked back to him, and he was staring at a doe just on the other side of the fence. As I got closer it ran off. My wife said she was out there a couple nights ago, and right at sunset 4 or 5 does were walking the tree line by the corn field, followed a minute or two later by a big buck.

It's bow season in WI right now, there's been some hunters on the land behind the horse stable, but I haven't seen any come back with one. But they're out there.

My stepdaughter lives in Davenport Iowa. Last week she got hit by a deer. Ran right into the side of her car. In town. It did not stick around to exchange insurance info.

My dad and I hung it up a few years ago. Gives us more time to fish in the FL Keys over the winter. I'll take two long weekends fishing off Big Pine over freezing my ass off in a blind. Do I miss it.....yes. Tried hunting down here in Ohio. Not my jam. Michigan UP over by Crystal Falls is my idea of hunting.

Been thru there a couple times. My sister lived north of Rhinelander for a few years and it was close to Crystal Falls. Lots of uninhabited land up there.

It's a good 7 hr drive from where I live.

I think they should release the hounds and get in it to win it. This war against the filthy, disease-ridden, cloven-hoofed rodents has gone on long enough.

Finish ‘em off once and for all.

Back in the olden days when I was in high school in Alabama, the first week of deer season was almost a frenzy with lots of the boys. Somehow the kids that struggled to get to school on time the rest of the year were up and in the woods at 4:00 AM before school. If they got one, they had their parents write a note to the principal to excuse him for the day.

The year before I started at that school, one kid had his rifle stolen from his pickup, so the principal told the entire school, just bring your rifles into the school, and to the principal's office for safe storage.

That entire week, teenage boys came walking down the hall with various hunting rifles, and a box of ammo in hand to bring them to the principal's office. I stored my camera gear in there as it would not fit in a locker. I would see 20+ riffles lined up in the principal's office, next to my two camera cases.

Things have changed a bit. Of course I walked to school when I was in the first grade. Escorted by my brother who was in the 3rd grade. That would get parents in jail now days. A different era.

I hope they cull a lot of deer this year. They are thick.

I wish Washington had a deer season. Oh, we do, on paper at least. That and elk. All of our seasons are so short, and many so fragmented, that we effectively really don't have any viable big game seasons like other states.

We must choose between archery, muzzle loader, and modern firearm, only being allowed to hunt our choice of one of the three. Many "seasons" don't even span two consecutive weekends. Game Management Units are small enough, and only open in such a patchwork as to allow pressured animals to walk a very short distance to find themselves in closed units, essentially during archery and muzzle loader seasons, and any elk season.

We get one deer and one elk per year outside of any special permits, which can be as high as 12,000:1 odds to draw. Our success rate on deer hovers at about 20% or less, elk at about 8%. "Tribal" hunters absolutely devastate our herds under the guise of "sustenance hunting" while shooting the biggest bucks and bulls, while selling their meat to local restaurants. Years ago a few disgruntled hunters documented, on video, these tribal "hunters" actually shooting elk off the hay bales set out at one of our Game Department 's feeding stations. It's a real mess.

So, yeah, in the end we essentially pay our Game Department a couple hundred bucks for the privilege of camping for a few days. No thanks. I no longer hunt my own state.
