Tucker Died the Other Night

My boy died Sunday night, suddenly. He was fine and jumpy in the morning then, at lunchtime, threw up his breakfast. He wouldn't come out to eat at 4--we went to dinner, got home, and found him nearly unconscious. He died in my arms about 30 minutes later--I think he was waiting for us to get home to die!

He was diagnosed with throat cancer (tonsil) 2 years ago and given 3-6 mos to live. So he well-defied those odds but it seems like the cancer must have come back and perforated an organ, probably the stomach.

My good buddy came over and we buried him in the backyard at midnight, clanging and cussing through the rocky Austin soil. I suspect the neighbors will want to account for all the human family members. We marked the grave yesterday with his food bowl inscribed on a post. I'm also not sure the grave in the back yard was a good idea since it reminds me of him every time I see it.

Anyway, after having read all the "passing dogs notes" and the grieving, I confess I was/am still amazed at how incredibly grief-struck I am. It's been 2 days and I still well up when I think about him. I also confess that he was my favorite (he's the smiling Rhodie on the left in the picture). Freaking perfect dog: loved to play but didn't bug me to play; great protector of the family but so gentle the cats would easily back him down; sweet and affectionate but not needy or licky; obedient but not so mental that it was annoying. Even on his last day he would jump up shoulder-height with all four legs off the ground to go for a walk.

Does anyone have an experienced opinion on whether I should get another dog or wait a while? I know that if we had only the one, I'd immediately get another. But we have 2 dogs now--the elder, Ben, is 14 and basically doesn't interact with Frankie the young setter mix. Ben will probably pass soon.

Thanks in advance and I hope I don't bum you guys out on Christmas.

Oh yeah. Merry Christmas.

Sorry to hear of this sad turn of events. There is no good time to say goodbye to a friend.

Decision to get another is tough, I have gone through this and always waited for a few months, up to a year. I always kept hearing the collar rattling even when he was gone, couldn't stand it any longer so would go out and find another friend. I always found it helped once the decision was made.

Sorry your Christmas is so bummed out, better times are coming. Your good buddy is running in green grass and no more pain.

Good times, indeed. Here is Tucker's progeny, "Hank". Four and a half months old and 55lbs. It's amazing how many odd rhodie things he does that Tucker did. With his liver coloring, he looks like a huge viszla with a ridge.

Here are my beasts. A perfect combo. One bites people, one fights dogs.
The one guarding the front door doesn't like dogs.
The one that guards the backyard doesn't like people.
Go figure.
