Psychology of "Baby on Board" sign
Here comes a rant....
I was overcome with a wave of annoyance at one of those "Baby on Board" signs a few minutes ago pulling into my work carpark. Why would any rational person ever have one? If they believe it will cause other drivers to take more care around them.... then it implies they moderate their own driving for such a sign. I don't want to be on the road with someone who modifies their driving for babies. I just want them to drive well, regardless. Maybe it is some kind of status symbol - "The driver of this car has figured out how to reproduce, and wishes the world to be aware". Parting shot - has anyone ever seen a "Baby on Board" sign on any vehicle other than an SUV? End of Rant...

Just married, come on Cam, another year or two you'll have your very own "Baby on board" sign in the back of the 911 and driving like Mr. Sensible.

Back in the 80s when those things started proliferating a friend of mine had a 'Baby in Trunk' sign.

Gee Cam, it DOES take a few years, or perhaps decades, for a USA fad to make it down there, doesn't it? I don't think I've seen one of those silly suction cup triangles for 10-15 years. Sure agree with you though. LIke a maniac, bent on destruction would think: "OMYGAWD, that one has a BABY aboard...I'd better look for someone else to purposely crash into!"

We haven't had them around here for 10+ years, and they used to annoy me too, but now that I have kids I think of those "Baby on Board" signs as kind of like those "My Daughter Is An Honor Student At XYZ High" stickers - no, I didn't really want to know, thanks, but basically harmless.
And they serve a very useful function - it tells the rest of us to watch out, the person in that vehicle is apt to be more distracted than you'd like a driver to be . . .

Agree completely. Timely post, I saw one today on an SUV and have nothing but complete disdain for the signs.
Although I did see one on a mazda 626. Guy approached the corner fast, real fast. Hits his brakes and doesn't lock up, powers around the corner. Never seen anyone push quite so hard on a public road. My friends laugh instantly once they see the 'baby on board' sign on the back. I guess it was a joke.

I seem to recall that one of the "uses" of those signs was to alert rescue personnel to look for a baby if the vehicle was involved in an accident.

I have a 4 month old who doesn't like being strapped in a car seat. So when I'm out tutling around with my sreaming child in the back seat it would be nice if I could warn people that I'm on the verge of a homicidal frenzy. Unfortunately I can't find any of those cute little signs in the stores anymore. Maybe it's for the best, because in the unlikely event that my son did fall alsleep in the car & some A-hole on a Harley with straight pipes pulls up next to me and starts rapping his POS, I would surely go postal.

Good one Cam.
I figured those where to compliment a vanity plate such as this:

Haha
To be fair, they first cropped up here 10-15 years ago. I think seeing one now is rare too --> and that was why I noticed it this time. That Simpsons episode is one of the greats, IMO.

As far as I understand it Nostatic has it right. I remember when these first came out in the early 80's when I was living in Germany, their stated purpose was to have the rescue crews do a double check for a baby if they don't find one initially. Sometimes those little things go under the seats or similar small places large size people aren't likely to be and could get missed in the rush.
It does seem that most of the time people buying these missed this use and instead they get used as excuses for bad driving: "Even though I'm driving like an idiot you can't hit me because I have a baby on board. Are you going to try to kill my baby?" I'm glad we don't see those around so much anymore, too. /Owain |

that's correct. I think I remember seeing the "Baby an Bord" signs in Deutschland in 80 -81 (maybe as early as 79) do you also remember the second-set-of-brake-lights posts that people used to install inside their rear windows? that was another phenomenon that started there and later on moved across the pond. they eventually turned into what we now know as the third brake light.
