I was going to throw this into that 356 thread, but I guess it's better here.

The US Marines fly Harriers... Pappy was a Marine... I met him in the early 70's in Denver at an airshow

Greg Jr. was in the US Air Force, not Marines, doubt he ever flew a Harrier, but....?

(thx Except for the the P-51 switching to the RR engine, I never knew we used equipment sourced from the Land of Lucas engineering.)

Interesting thing about the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_F4U_Corsair:
It was built around the engine. Getting the biggest fattest paddle propellers on it required drooping the wings for the landing gear thus the shape.

The other aircraft to use that same engine were:
Canadair CL-215
Convair CV-240 family
Douglas A-26 Invader
Douglas DC-6
Grumman F6F Hellcat
Martin B-26 Marauder
Republic P-47 Thunderbolt
Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave

From what I understand, the F4U used a geared multi stage supercharger whereas the P51 had a turbo. Each had its pluses and minuses. The turbo superchargers were superior at high altitude but the Navy was not usually up there.

The Marines fly the AV8B which is a derivative of the Harrier and the Brits now fly the Harrier II which is a derivative of the AV8B.

AV8B:

Harrier GR.3:

The Brits don't fly any VSTOL at the moment, sold em all (to the US marines for spare parts) and their carrier, they are preparing/trialing the new carrier for the F35 at the moment.

The original picture with pappy written on it, is a US marines AV-8B Harrier II
