Horrible cars, but the SHO version was pretty amazing. I rode in one once when I was in college. A bunch of us piled into what I thought was essentially a crappy family car. I was in the back seat. My brain was very confused when the driver reached down, grabbed the shifter, rocked it back and forth to check that it was in neutral and then stuck it in reverse. I sat transfixed by the manual shifter with my head cocked the side like like a dog. The guy then stopped, and stuck it in first, and we pulled away with surprising grunt for a crappy family car with at least 5 good sized college guys in the car.

My understanding from the time was that from a stop light, a mustang would take them, but if you were on the road at 50 or 60, that the SHO would take the mustang.

I bought a new 1990 SHO. But I am pretty sure it did not have a V8, I think it was a V6 built by Yamaha. Fantastic motor....the car, not so much. Mine was Black / Black and loaded. Kept it 14 months then returned it under the Lemon law. Car was back in the dealership 19 times over the 14 months.......stranded me 4 different times. Really bad experience.

I'm pretty sure that Yamaha did the R&D for the top end on a modified production 3.0 short block. They were ahead of their time. Too bad it was on a FWD platform.

Yes, the heads were Yamaha. The early years 89/90-95 SHOs had V6s. 1996-1999 had the V8. It is an all aluminum "Cosworth casting" block, heads by Yamaha. It makes a beautiful noise!!! I know, the black car I posted is actually mine.

The first and second gen gen SHO's (89-91 and 92-95 respectively) were V6. They were 3.0L designed by Yamaha but based on the Ford Vulcan architecture but were different engines. They were available with manual or auto.

The 3rd gen SHO (96-99) jelly beans were truly awful cars. They had a unique V8 again by Yamaha. They also did a good job of eating themselves as the cam timing sprockets were swaged not bolted on to the cam. They cam loose and valves and pistons trying to coexist in time and space with predictable results. They were auto only.
