The 3rd gen SHO (96-99) jelly beans were truly awful cars. They had a unique V8 again by Yamaha. They also did a good job of eating themselves as the cam timing sprockets were swaged not bolted on to the cam. They cam loose and valves and pistons trying to coexist in time and space with predictable results. They were auto only.
I had a first gen with manual. Great engine unfortunately front drive had epic torque steer.

On the left is a pressure treated 2x4. On the right is untreated. Both were left in my storage unit for 4 years laying on the ground. The PT will live to serve another day. The other not so much.

Did you ever have a Gen3 SHO? They aren't as awful as you think. Yes the cam issue was, an issue, I agree. Apparently some cams were built better than others though because my engine has nearly 160,000 miles on it and the engine runs as smooth as silk. The only issue I have had with the car was with the transmission, other than that, it's been a good car.
