My Tribute to Edward Weston

This was part of my final assignment for History of Photography. Small aperture, slow ISO, and long exposure with all natural light.

Nice work. I am curious, do you turn in photographic prints or a digital file for the assignment. Are you using film or just digital photography?

Good black and white is really hard to do. Masters like Ansel Adams made it look easy.

When I moved, it was maybe only 10% of capacity, and I put it in my upstairs closet, not really thinking I'd ever fill it. FF nearly two decades, all my kids have left home, so it's up to my wife and I to deal with it. It was far to heavy for me to lift, and I didn't think for a second the glass was strong enough to hold the contents.

My plan was to roll it on its side to the middle of the bedroom, and then up a ramp I built so it would end up about 2' above the floor. I took a 5 gallon paint bucket, turned it upside-down and cut a hole in the bottom (which was now the top) so I could tip the glass bottle onto/into the upended bucket. All was proceeding well, until it wasn't. Some imperceptible flaw, or some imperceptible bump on the ramp caused the whole bottle to fail at right about the top of the ramp. 60 year old glass shards (no safety glass here) went everywhere, and while no one was hurt, it took me days to pick every bit of glass from the 5' diameter pool of change on my floor. Live and learn I suppose...

Since my kids had always scrambled when I got home from work to get my change and drop it in the jar, I had them each write down there guess as to the value of the contents. The winner got a big gift card to Amazon. The actual amount was $2,112.12. Those 6 plastic bags were REALLY heavy - I actually thought it'd be worth a bit more.

I had an old carboy from my wine making days. I decided to repurpose it for a pressurized water tank. I had taken an old refrigerator up to the "ranch" house. It had an ice maker but the well water there is horribly mineralized with iron. Any ice cubes came out brown. I figured I could pump in enough air into the carboy to run bottled water into the ice maker. I cobbled up a rig to do that. I was testing it to about 20 psi to see if my seals on the siphon rig were holding air. Well that worked well but during the night the whole thing went off like a bomb. Lucky no one was around it or they could have been hurt. Yeah, glass everywhere. I felt real stupid after that one.

Yea, glass is not a great pressure vessel.
