Pronunciation

I was asked a strange question today.

Is 944 pronounced nine forty-four or nine four four?

I always thought it was nine forty-four..similar to nine eleven

in germany they say neun hundert elf as in ninehundred eleven.
i say nine four four, nine two eight, nine six eight etc because its faster. although i dont say nine one one (that just sounds weird to me). i think its customary to group the last 2 numbers together.

Most Germans and\or Porsche employees in Germany that I have spoken to refer to the cars by grouping the last two numbers:

944: nine-forty four: neun vierundvierzig, Not neun-vier-vier or neunhundert vierundvierzig.

911: neun elf
930 neun dreizig
968 neun achtundsechzig
959 neun neunundfunfzig

and so on.

well, no. he didn't say 'nein', he said 'nien' which quite possibly could be nine in another language. Swahili perhaps??

I am strange. I refer to it as a nine four four. Then there is the nine sixty eight, the nine twenty eight, the nine twenty four, nine thirty one. The 944 is the only model that I seperate the numbers. Maybe because it is so special.

I figured that hitting him for both mistakes would just be too harsh.

It seems like porsche have a multitude of problems with pronounciation of their products. People are still arguing over whether it's poorsh or poorsha, thats before you even get to the numbers! I imagine tey chose numbers to avoid complication at some point but you can have a 944 that is pronounced nine five one!?

I just say S2, because I can...

Each to their own on this one I think

Yo Yo, it's da G-fo fo!
sorry, I couldn't resist.....
I tend to agree with the german pronunciation of all of this. Neun vierundveirzig, so nine forty four... however to each their own, just don't call it a civic or an integra or slap a type-r on it, and you're saying it right =)

As to the porsch-e- debate, I believe in german, since the e at the end follows a consonant (sp?), I believe it is pronounced as a hard e, making it sound more like porscha
Although I am still learning German (sorry, only in 201), and I could be incorrect here.
As a rule, I stick to the german way of saying things, or at least how I think the germans would say it.

I usually just say nine four four when phoning around for parts. I rarely draw attention to it being a PorschE because it sounds so desperately pretentious.
