There goes the diet...

First confirmed case:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/12/23/mad.cow/index.html

It had to happen sooner or later, I guess.

Didn't Canada have one of these a while back?

I will say, this is one of those times I'm happy with a govt program. It's really great that they're doing such testing. I suppose the UK was quite a wake-up call.

Now if these dumbasses don't sound like a bunch of cowboys....

Quote:
The National Cattlemen's Beef Association promised to support aggressive steps to eliminate any trace of BSE from the U.S. cattle population, and said the system had worked in tracking down the case in Washington state.

"Consumers should continue to eat beef with confidence," the NCBA said in a statement. "All scientific studies show that the BSE infectious agent has never been found in beef muscle meat or milk and U.S. beef remains safe to eat."

A spokesman promised a vigorous campaign to reassure the public, saying "We will be on this like white on rice, the next few days."
How 'bout spending that marketing budget on cleaning up your f*cking act, OK?

Well, at least there's a way to test for MadCow. That 'healthy' vegetarian Chi Chi's green salsa??? Bit of a crap shoot according to the restaurant itself :

Chi-Chi's chief operating officer Bill Zavertnik said the company was "gratified" that state officials traced the outbreak to green onions and not to Chi-Chi's employees. He also noted that state officials confirmed there is no "industry-accepted" way to test green onions for hepatitis A or to clean them enough to ensure they are safe. Yikes!!!!!

This is pretty crappy news....

The people really hurt by this will be the farmers. When the doors closed on beef in Canada (because of our 1 mad cow), we had a huge oversupply and it was being sold off at ridiculous prices. 60% off all steaks, 70% off hamburger, etc. Nice for the consumer, but it has hurt the farming industry quite a bit.

I hope you guys fare better, but it kind of pisses me off that it's already being called 'no big deal' and 'no cause for concern' by analysts, gov't officials and such. We paid a huge toll because of 1 cow that DIDN'T enter the processing plant. If it's 'no big deal' - why was the border closed and the Canadian industry punished for so long?

Regards,
Andrew M

Todd's correct - the cow was a "downer." It was already suspected as being ill. It went into slaughter - as do all cows - but toward "rendering." There, its tissue was tested, and the results came up that it had BSE (mad cow disease).

But it was still processed - into feed for other animals. Since this news, "feed," as a product, has grown to mean not just what other livestock eat, but pet food too.

So it's figured that in the least, more cows are eating feed partially made from this infected cow, while the other bits and pieces are being forward-traced to where they could have gone.

The scary part is the incubation period in cows is three years or so.

In humans, the incubation period is six to ten years. People could already have it and not know.

Of course, our government is saying the possibility of human infection is "very low."

I'll take the Chicken McNuggets, please.

Nine countries have already boycott our beef. Almost all the Pacific Rim and Mexico.

IMHO - this is where Europe has it all over us. They make it illegal to put animal parts in feed.

Some bright news: most Americans eat muscle cuts of a cow and not where the disease resides in the cow, which is the brain and central nervous system.

Of course, eating "brains and eggs," for breakfast is out around here.

BTW: Homeland Security was called -- Tom Ridge assured this was not an Al Queda attack or otherwise.

Sure has ironic timing, though...

The new Mad Cow fear collides with the current Atkins craze and increasing fish depletion - guess there's gonna be a run on poultry and hogs . . .
