NFS-Porsche Unleashed revisited

Well, I finally got the game to run under WinXP. Finally.

As this is the only game I own, I did not have any controller, so I tried to use the keyboard.
Wrecked a very nice 356 Cab on the streets of Monte Carlo.

Quickly bought a Logitech wheel at Costco.
Look out Hans Herrmann, here I come!

How did you get it to run on XP?

1. Find the "latest" version.
2. Put disc in CD drive. Install program as per screen prompts.
3. Eject the disc, then put it back in. Drive starts to run, then a "Safe Disc" (copy guard) warning comes up.
4. Eject the disc, put back in, and let it auto start again.
5. ***Don't touch any "buttons" on the EA screen that may appear, just let it auto run. Game will load, and you can start crashing cars.

You need a vid card that will handle DirectX 7.0. That was one of my problems. My computer is a "business" type, that didn't have a tricky vid card. I replaced it with a ATI Radeon 9200 128mb.

Set the virtual memory to a fixed size, say between 256 and 512mb and it should work okay. The CD check thing is a pita, you can get a hacked exe file from www.megagames.com I think.

It's a very cool game, but I never had problems running it on WinXP.

I'm actually way better with the keyboard instead of the steering wheels. Steering the older cars with the throttle is the best part of a very involving game. You really immerse yourself in it: the sounds, body roll, everything... perfect!

Well, there is so much to this game, I have a lot of things (and cars) to try yet. But the older cars do seem to have their quirky handling preserved. If you have ever driven a real 356, things will seem quite familiar.

The EA people who developed this game must have done a *lot* of homework!

Adam....I admire your use of the keyboard. All I could do with it is crash, crash, crash!

Heh heh,

I love how they suffer panel damage, too! It adds to the frustration of scraping the guardrails!

No problems w/ XP here. I am having a problem spinning the GT1 on the skid pad, any hints?

Yes there is a 951 but I'm not sure where you come accross it yet.

It took me a year to get it to run on XP. I tried everything page file size, renaming the gimme.dll, you name it. I finally set compatibility to Win2000 (after upgrading every component in the computer, including drivers).
It works great now, except it still locks up big time in evolution. I'm a master factory driver but I can't get past the second race in evolution.
I'm using a steering wheel with pedals, makes it a lot easier.

I gave up on spinning the GT1 too. Maybe you really need a wheel and pedals to do it.

Bummer, I have a wheel and pedals.

I think the wheels are made of glue and the brakes must be 5 stage rotors!

So, has anyone on this forum done a 360 in the GT1?

Yes, I have completed the game over and over. As for the GT1 - just do what you have to do with the 996 cab, just a bit more. The whole spinning thing is dumb anyway. Why would you want to 360 in a GTI?

A quick twitch to the left, then right on full power, then handbrake, let off for just a second then floor it. 360.

Hey! One of us needs to host a game. 4-8 Pelicans in the 911S, racing through Monty Carlo... Bring it on!
