I agree, one should always look where one is going. But leaving stuff behind a car is setting things up too. Hence both share the responsibility.
Because she'd run over anything in her way backing up in her pickup truck, that's why my wife parks on the street. She does not even park in the driveway. Yeah, you heard right, I somehow convinced her to drive a parts hauler and project puller and leave all the important space to my cars. ![]() George |

Life is not about who's at fault, or who's more right - that just sets up relationships to be confrontational. Egos need to be put in check. Stuff is just stuff and can be replaced far more easily than relationships. Life is about foregiveness, a good laugh, and not sweating the small stuff. Now if the car was hit and totaled, that would be another matter (wink).

I have a small child, 2 years old, that I cannot see over my fender or rear trunk. I would kill myself if this happened involving a child. I am very careful when I back my car in to my garage to make sure that she is no where in the garaga. When she is in the garage, I put her inside one of the car(s), close the doors and the window (she likes playing inside the cars) and then I do my car maneuvering. Inside the car is the safest place for her.
Driver at fault, no matter what you run over.

In a traffic accident, the person backing the car is usually at fault. It is called "unsafe backing."
Marriage is about compromise though....

Oh, this is an easy one. The person with the outdoor plumbing, you know, the one with a "PEN15." That's the person who's at fault. Understanding this is critical to your happiness.

Don't know why, but I would have thought that you were the one in the car. Fancy placing a box of stuff behind the car! No offense intended, but why did you do that? Knowing my spouse to be like most other lady drivers, I wouldn't place anything infront of or behind a car that she was likely to drive, lol. However, I would probably have driven over your box aswell, so I shouldn't be sexist I guess.

I placed the stuff behind the car....because I was working on the SC....I was doing rock chip repair for the better part of an hour while she was drinking coffee, taking a shower and blow drying the hair..... The box of stuff was my polishing and paint supplies that I had purchased the day before....
My "other" garage is up the hill and far enough away that I have a 33cc scooter that I zip up and down the street with. I can't do much work up there as yet since it is NOT completely finished....otherwise I woulda been up there. Since the main garage is a typical 1970s one....i.e., NOT designed for a GMC YUKON XL and to be spacious, it is tight quarters for loading the 3 monsters with school books and other accoutrements. So...the better half backs the Yuk out and loads up there....not bagging on the spouse....but she has a history of running over things....this time I hope she will gain from the experience and look behind the car before backing up. Last month Dateline did a survey on SUV blind spots....the #1 accident is backing over things that shouldn't have been there. It's a good habit to look behind your car before pulling out. Hopefully we can ALL learn from this.... BTW....I;m STILL cleaning out polishing compound from the wheel wells and underneath.....

Mike,
No matter what, you should take the blame and the happy marriage. I hope that I could take that advice but I know there have been occassions when my wife has taken the bullet for me! Yes, she should have looked and yes, you should not have put the box behind her vehicle. The driver is responsible for ensuring the safety of their actions but losing an argument, saying yes dear, I am wrong, will win more for you in the long run. And when she makes the same mistake, you can just rub it in that much harder (the imp just couldn't resist!) ![]()

A friend of mine was well known for hauling ass out of his garage without looking. Hit lots of stuff. Always pissed because someone left a bike, scooter or something behind his car.
One day he ran over his daughters life-sized doll. Scared him to death when he first saw it. Now he always circles the car from the back before getting in. Good idea for all of us.

In 1600-1700's Salem when this occured with horse and buggy, it was mandatory to burn one of the two parties at the stake.

Sue for emotional and moral damages.
That way you can still be a winner, even if you are wrong. But get this. I have a large box in which all our 'domestic' tools live.....I needed it to fix some stuff in the house over the week end. I leave it out whilst doing said stuff......pretty logical. NOw home comes little miss and kiddie.. OHHHH tolls says thelad, AHHH tools says his mother... So tool box gets tidied away and stuffed into cupboard.... All very logical. Now in that box was a large can of WD40.......now the WD40 is out of the can and all over the inside of the tool box, the tools, etc etc etc. Whose fault, mine of course as I had the tools out in the first place..... Anyway she's on kitchen duty for the week.....as if she minds and I have to clean out my tool box ( ![]() ![]() ![]() Plus I get to make fun of her at any time. Isn't life grand. |
