Driving the Diablo? I don't think I would've.
People get stupid enough driving around Porsches on the road. Imagine what Joe Sixpack might do in his minivan just to get that once-in-a-lifetime 'closer look'. |
That is an amazing story. Though it is hard to believe, I actually believe it.
As far as fear of shipping cars, I wouldn't sweat it. I'm sure this driver was not following company policy. No reasonable person would have allowed the test drives, making this situation a real exception. Are there other unreasonable delivery drivers? Sure, but they are few in number and wouldn't last long in the job. In fact, I would have fired this guy for taking 4 hours just to unload / load. |

And on the firing, I agree except most of these guys are owner/drivers. Can't fire the boss. Why doesn't this happen to me? :p |

Truly a scary and amazing story. I am glad no one/nothing was hurt. While we can all sit here and say we wouldn't have touched the cars, I am sure the temptation was great.
But Don, don't fool yourself for a moment into thinking that you wouldn't be on the hook both criminally and civilly if something had gone wrong. The driver of the transport had no more authority to allow you to drive those cars than would a parking valet or a car thief for that matter. And without at least apparent authority, you were no more than joyriders. Deep down, I always feared that this kind of thing went on. Kind of like food dropping on the floor at restaurants, people sneezing on the salad bar, etc., but to actually hear from someone who participated in it, gives me shivers. |

Come to think of it, if the story is true, I believe that the borrowing driver could be guilty of grand theft auto! The truck driver could be guilty of accessory or something. We're talking felonies here! Come-on now you can tell us it was a joke. I know I was taken in! |
Everybody relax, it's a CAR. Just a CAR. Does it not have air in it's tires? Does it not have oil in it's veins? If you crash it, will it not bleed the same lifeblood that our beloved Porsches bleed? Relax, gentlemen, he simply took it for a spin.

I'd like to see you say "Relax" after something like that happens to your Carrera. I would be in jail for murder after I found out someone had let my car go out for a joyride.
|
Just a car don't cut it for me, sorry. I feel the same way about my wife too.
|
Let's hope Zoanas is simply pulling our collective leg.
BR, Kurt |
yelcab, I hope you're not suggesting your wife means the same to you as a replaceable piece of metal on 4 wheels.
|
it's not as replaceable as you say it is, not if you spent blood sweat and tears to get it to be like you want it, not if you just not happen to be Donald Trump with a gazillion bucks on your bank account. not if you just happened to have made sacrifices to get it in the first place...
sure Amir, you don't have a problem lending out your SC to whoever asks, and yeah , when that person totals it , you will not be bothered, you'll just get another one just like it from the supermarket... mine is not replaceable to me, i would be in shatters if anything bad would happen to it. and even if it would be payed back by insurance, i would still not be casual about it. |

I wonder how many people took YOUR car out for a spanking? Four hours to unload cars? More reasons to use Intercity Lines. I will add this to the pile of transporter stories I have been told. Unreal!
Best, Don |
Nobody here's saying what Don did was alright, but given the chance some of us would decline and some of us would jump at it. This difference in opinion is what makes us all human. I understand you have a lot of blood/sweat/tears in your car, I do too. A poor college student like myself doesn't have the money to just drop it off at the shop and pick it up all spiffy clean and serviced, I know what it feels like to slam a red bull at midnight, button the suspension back up by 2:00 a.m. on sunday so I can get out in the canyons. But at the end of the day, the car is replaceable, many others like it rolled off the assembly line. If you're insured properly (agreed value) then it's even more replaceable. Would I be pissed if I found out someone was driving the crap out of my car halfway across the country? Yes. Would I sue the crap out of them and make sure I never use the shipping company again? Yes. Would that make me wish physical harm or death upon the people who did it? No, the damn thing can be replaced if it's totalled and if there's something mechanically wrong as a result of the joyride, that can be fixed as well.

Would I have done the same if offered?......probably.
Would I have posted on a public BBS that I did?......probably not. (But I am glad someone else posted it.);) |
