That's pretty messed up.. I know you're concerned for your daughter but jesus christ that's taking it a bit too far.

Edit: Nevermind, I just read the rest of the thread.. it's still kind of strange but understandable now that I know the whole story.

Drug tests are pretty dang invasive, and don't work a lot of times:
Alcohol is disappated after a day or so, so unless she drank the night before.., poppy seed bagels will show up as Heroin, LSD can only be found by sticking a needle in her spine(that's a good dad, she'll love you for that one), and does the single joint she smoked earlier this month really control todays driving skills? I've also heard the tests can be fooled by massive vitamin C'ing, eating a lot of meat and watering the sample(I had some skeezy high school friends as you can probably tell, but never had their problems).

She may be trying to imitate dads rockstar image, but I don't know the situation. Love and acceptance go a long way in terms of childhood development even if the results are not immediate.

Interesting thread, sorry for the accident. I vote for her scrapping a mailbox or something fixed like that.

Never seen a person do the home drug tests, but you do what you got to do, you know better than anyone here.

Are you system admin Schrup?

My first car was a 1999 Acura Cl at 16. I'm 18 now and have the car in my signature. I've neer been in an accident, I smoke pot probably once a week. Im not gonna lie and say I dont drive the Porsche high sometimes. BTW really fun with an M&K with the windows down. I've never been scared driving high, actually it really doesnt affect it at all. Just makes you drive slower, and makes you more paranoid, so contrarily I'm a little too careful when I smoke. I never race or anything. I just read a pamphlet about marijuana and driving and it said it "may" affect driving and cause accidents. BUT there was a little tiny footnote attached saying, when mixed with alcohol. Pot alone wont get you into much trouble, personally I think drug testing is ridiculous, unless it changes your personality, which will only happen if you smoke with the wrong attitude.

just my thoughts

Your daughter must feel really bad about it. You trusted her with a fine car and she probably feels she has let you down big time.

Go easy on her. It is a dangerous world. In a different but statistically not unlikely perspective she could have been seriously hurt.

I have no explanation as to why my 17 year old son has grown up without causing us any headaches (so far). We've let him know we're always on his side, that we have his best intrests at heart. Hope things work out for the daughter and you.

I think poor Shrup and his daughter have probably moved past this by now. Check the date on his first post.

My daughter is now almost 19 years old. She confessed that she did in fact wipe out the side of the Mustang on the bumper of a construction truck backing out of a parking space. She's also admitted to almost getting a DWI about a year later. Her Nanna bought her a nice 1988 Forester for graduation & she totaled it 3 months later on her way to Hempfest. She had good insurance, but not full coverage & now she has no wheels.

Looking back on this thread, I wouldn't have changed a thing. Up until that point she had been a very honest kid, but that changed. Drug testing was a great tool for a while. She brought it on herself, just like people do at my work. My son won't be getting a car till he turns 18 unless he does some exceptional things (honor roll, volunteer work, ect.)

She's starting to get a little dose of reality & I think she realizes that I was only trying to protect her & the family. I hope she pulls her head out & quits smoking weed so she can find some direction. I warned her that if she's still smokin weed everyday after she's 21 that she'll probable be impoverished for the rest of her life. I'm certainly glad she doesn't live with me anymore, I don't miss the drama.

I was the uber-rebel. When I was 15/16/17, I used to piss my parents off by staying in the computer lab too late after school.

hey thanks for the update paul... i think this thread is back from the time when you were "pschrup"

i've known others like your daughter and it's a 50/50 on the outcome later on. there are the obvious ones that don't get good grades etc and unless they somehow hit big (art/music/lotto), didn't do much later on.

even out of the smart ones that fly through undergrad w/ good grades and not much effort (a lot of the brainy ones party hard w/ drugs, just not everyday) only about half of those progress beyond.

as for the car, that's a tough one. you want them to be safe, so you need a modern car instead of a paper thin rabbit/miata etc, but probably not worth it to get them a new car... it *will* get damaged. my guess is i'll go w/ a de-commissioned ex-police duty caprice or something comparably large and 'safe'

Wow, what a thread revival...2004...

Just my $.02
"STUDENTS" should not smoke weed.

That being said...uh, what was i talking about?

Weed doesn't make you dumber, but it does prevent learning and emotional growth.

I know this will never happen, but should you get into an accident and total your 911 while driving high, can I have the first dibs on the M&K?

I'm an undergrad in pot-legal BC and have a few friends who'll tell you quite some stories about the time they mixed driving with pot smoking. And one or two who don't live to tell. Just don't do it man.

Pari has a good point about the Police. Insist that you accompany your daughter to file a hit 'n run report w/ them. Let her know about the hi- tech techniques they have to reconstruct an accident ( ). She may fess up if she's afraid of being found out in the police station.

Also, if she says she'll live with the damage insist she get it fixed.
I'm thinking that there may be a gray/black SUV which was parked and looking for a green car that hit it. I'm not sure the cops will connect the dots, they are not as smart as the TV cops from what I've experienced.

EDIT:

I'm no expert but my first impression of the side damage was it looks like a large industrial truck backed into it.
