good for you P-Car Kiddo
SvK |
I got mine when I was 27 and the car was 10.
|
ok, here we go:
at 29 i bought a 70 911E (which was not as good as i thought - since sold) at 30 i bought an 88 Carrera (which was slow - since sold) at 32 i built an RS replica for the track (still have) at 34 i bought a 78 930 for the street (still have) most of my mates don't get it |
I'm waaaaaaaaaay under 40 (!) and I own a 72E......have done for 6 years now and before that is was another 72E Targa for a couple of years.
|
76 and Im 35. Perhaps its a perception on reliability of older cars coupled with the available new technology (safety and performance). I would assume that most vintage 911 owners have these as second/third cars. Rarely do you find people with the resources (either the time or the money) in their younger years to properly maintain older vehicles. If they did want them than supply & demand would dictate that they would cost more. Yay for me. PS own a SUV and also now the dreaded dual door sliding, crazy seat folding, 87 cupholder, "could you walk out back to see what she stuck up her nose while were doing 80 mph", minivan.

I'm 33 and my car is 32....
|
I bought my 72 when I was 31. None of my mates got it. Now when I show them the performance and mention how much these cars are selling for, they're starting to get it. Too late
|
I'm 34 and and my car is 28... but I also have an SUV, it's a beemer so it's not toooo bad as SUVs go.
|
Yesterday I was 24, today I'm 25. I got the car when I was 23. The car is named Drena --she's a huge whore-- and is 21.
|
I am 37, my cars are 34 and 31.
|
I am 23 and I have a 77 911.
I think that people don't understand the cars and don't understand what price range they fall into. Most people my age love the car, but heard that porsches were unreliable and cost a lot to upkeep. I was extremely worried about reliability at first, but my car, at least, has been rock solid. I also doubt that a lot of young people realize that for the price of a new civic you can get an sc or carrera in good condition. The population in general doesn't know enough about the cars or they'd be much more sought after. The other thing (that was already mentioned) is just that most people use porsches as a second car while most young people only have one car. How many of you have your 911 as your only means of transportation? |
Just turned 30 and have had the '85 since I was 28. I think Alan nailed a lot of it - Porsches are very misunderstood in terms of cost to own. I hate even telling people I don't know about my 911, because of the eye-rolling and the perception that I'm bragging about my big expensive sports car. Yeah. My sports car that costs less than your brand new Toyota Matrix.
That said, I know a lot of the DC guys are in the sub-40 crowd. |
Just a note, but as for the finances of owning two cars goes, lots of young people could do it if they wanted to. Every kid that has a car in the low $20k (rsx, celica, wrx, etc) could spend $10-$15k on the 911 and $5-$10k on a commuter.

me 19, car will be 20 in a couple months.
|
Bought a 944 at 20
The 911 at 25 The RS at 27 the 930 at 28 The Cup at 30 Now I am 33 and a 993 RS is itching me. See sig below. |
i am 23. had mein 912 since i was 17 :D
instead of buying a honda that was a few years old like most people my age, i bought a vintage porsche in pretty good condition that was 30+ years old, and then i bought a pos beater to flog around daily. mosy of my drives are longer than your average cruse around town.. north carolina for a weekend.. illinois, for a weekend.. cleveand for a day trip. cincy for a few hours.. hocking hills and southern ohio for a few hours of fund driiving.. but i really like long adventureous road trips. after all.. its not about reaching your final destination.. its the adventure you have along the way. or sometimes just a drive in the country for a few hours of solitude to be at one with my steed and the road i drove my 912 6000+ miles round trip across country to california last year when i was 22.. and i will be doing it again in a month and a half. this year its monterey or bust.. hopefuly with out the bust this time  Harry "young Hoffman" bound to cover just a little more ground |
Both my car and I were born in 74
Separated at birth but finally reunited http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/love.gif |
My car and I also celebrate the same birth year. I don't think you count 1982 as vintage though...
|
I did have a 1969 911T which I sold at xmas time, and I am 30. However had the car when I was 29.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1087467852.jpg I guess alot of young people look straight at HP figures and count many of the early cars out. Along with all the associated problems like rust, resprays, etc etc. I love the early cars, just that they are getting so hard to find good examples in Australia, and they are now getting very expensive for quality cars. |
I'm 27 and my car is 28. I bought it when I was 23 after selling my 928. My MGB project car is 35 and my old Honda S600 38 years old!
Good thing I have a company car to keep me from pedalling all these relics! |
