Well, possibly speaking only for myself, I couldn't afford a 911 when I was younger. The reality of needed reliable transportation, affording a place to live and eating took precedence over my lust for a 911. Having said that, I could have afforded one when I got out of college (that was my dream), but the high cost of insurance killed it.
This was in the mid-80s when even older 911s were no where near as inexpensive as they are now. Anything under $10k was junk and this was at a point in time where $10k could by quite a few new cars. I scrimped and saved and bought a much-maligned, but affordable '76 (with the evil 2.7) when I was 29 and have had it (and loved it) for almost 11 years now. Mike |
SvK, us early car owners don't fall into any specific age group, unless you define the group as old enough to drive through too old to drive.

I am 31 and the car is 32

36 car is a 73' (feel like I am 50 :-)). I think a lot of under 40 year olds dont have the space or cash for a "3rd" (if your married) car. Which a vintage 911 almost has to be (unfortunately). Sorta what others have said above.

I was born in '68 and the car in '74. I have had her since I was in my mid twenties. I had a 944 concurrently w/ the 911 in my late twenties and an SC Race car project that I sold off about four years ago.
I also have an SUV ...two if you count my wifes 2003 Land Rover. My daily driver is a '97 Expedition w/ 150K on the clock ...great truck. |
I'm 27, bought the car when I was 25, she's my older woman;)
|
I got my '79 SC when I was 20 and I've had it for three years. My father bought a '78 SC new and I just grew up wanting one... really badly!
|
Mine is an 83 (built in Sept 82), so I guess it's nearing 22 years old. I'm nearing 31 years old. I don't think I could use it as my daily driver. One, I'm afraid of getting plowed into by some of the DC areas finist drivers. Two, my mechanical skills are still not refined enough to rely upon them (as evidenced by many of my posts ;) )

At 17 bought a 74 karmann Ghia conv- sold
At 21 bought a 76 914 - crashed At 25 bought a 84 944 - sold At 31 bought a 83 911SC still have the speedster in my sig. I inherited from my father, my parents dated in it. Great car, bad trade. That car ignited the passion and rejuvinates it with every turn of the key.. |
I'm 29 and I own mine since 3 years and it's 69 then 35 !! :D
|
Most of my buddies don't get it with the older cars. ...Good Company on this Board!
|
I'm 30 and have two '72 coupes. Until I got these cars, I had an '85 Carrera which I bought when I was 22. I've vowed to have at least one 911 at all times until I die.
So if I have two '72s...I guess I'm really only 15 years old per car. Awesome! |
I'm 36 and my car is a '73. I have had it two years. I xan remember being in a Porsche dealer in 1971 and knowing that one day I woul dhave one. It took a while.

If a '77 is vintage, I'm 36. The car sat for 10+ years in a relative's garage and every year I would plan on bringing it back to life. But I had to get through school, get married and have 3 kids. Got it running last fall and able to share it with the family.
Like jazzbazz, I hestitate mentioning the p-car as it is perceived to be an expensive sports car. In reality the cost of my daily driver (mazda p-up) and the p-car together are less than the cost of 95% of the cars in the parking lot. Maybe the perceived expense (cost and maintainence) is why they are not more popular with the under 40 crowd. |
I was 20 when I got my first 911 ( a '70T)
Im 43 now and have a '69 911, and '75 914 Ive been a Porsche owner for 23 years My grandpa had a 356 it runs in the family :D |
I am 31. I bought my 1st P-car this feb (88 Carrera). No matter how you look at it Porsches are not inexpensive.
First need 15-20k in cash to get into one (yes even the early ones will end up costing that much whan everything is sorted out), then there is the mntainance. Also you can't lease a 20 year old P. And taking out a loan to buy a 20year old car is not such an easy decision for someone that maybe is just out of college and still has to repay their student loan. |
I am 30. Bought my 911 when I was 28.
|
I'm 32 and my car is 30.
|
I will be having my 6th 29th birthday this year. :)
I bought my 68 911 when I was 26. I had wanted a 911 since I was 5. |
