Yankee I am still calling bullshiit on your claims of military combat service and being an FBI agent. I don't doubt you were in the military and you can talk some of the talk, but it still sounds like the talk of someone that made it through basic training and AIT and his only experience in combat is what he has read and seen in the movies.

Kurt:

So I passed your test that at least I went thru Basic and AIT. That's some progress I suppose. The war stuff you can find in an afternoon at the library reading thru paperbacks.

That's exactly what I said would happen earlier. The only way to prove I'm real is to post my retired FBI card and it's ain't gonna happen. I'm not putting my ass in that crack. Sorry to disappoint you. You can go ahead and collect your bets.

So now you still don't know. I could be Tabs, a Honda ricer troll, a 16-yr-old kid somewhere or what I say I am. You'll just have to live with it.

best Vietnam real account "paperback" is called (IMHO) Guns UP by Johnnie Clark. Lots of good lingo. We could all talk the talk after reading this one. (I am a true soldier wanna be, read everything about Nam... 2 uncles and Dad there...I was born in Okinawa...and here I am behind a desk). also, this is the best post ever, fun to follow.

Had a friend in PCA in the Bay Area that I'd known for seven years. One day at an autocross, I saw hin acknowlege another guy I knew and asked him where he knew him from. He said "I met him when he pulled me out of a burning helicopter." In seven years, that was the first he'd ever spoken of any of his three tours in 'nam. Ultimately, he did tell me a few things, and I understood why he'd remained silent so long. Yes, he was involved in atrocities -- actions approved by his superiors. And the worst part was that he still didn't see anything wrong with them. I finally figured out that this guy was a likely candidate to pull out his M16 and walk into a government office, shooting. I finally figured out this guy was a sociopath and stayed away from him.

So now you know why some of us just keep our mouths closed about our military duty.

Things are done in war that do not make any sense in peactime. So, I'm very suspicious of people who are too free with their 'war' stories.

Couldn't agree more strongly with tech and sing. My dad was in vietnam for over 5 years, he was class of 62 out of West Point and was certified in both Airborne training and Ranger school, deployed less than a year after graduating and marrying my mom. He would NEVER talk like yankee about any of this stuff, and he sure as hell wouldn't try to use some soldier lingo to do it. I see some HUGE BS flags here.

Your dad was a ring-knocker. I was a grunt. Two different worlds. He probably uses military-speak in the officer's club. There is a wall there and grunts talk a little differently. That's all. But you are correct that real vets don't talk about it because they can't talk about it without some strong negative outcomes.

My 1st wife was all touchy-feely when I got home--about 2 weeks after we got married--and wanted to know all about it, all about the scars, why did I have nightmares and why don't I talk about it to our friends---etc, etc, etc. We finally talked--and she walked.

I haven't talked 10 minutes about this **** to anybody but her in 25 years except flat on my back on a couch in private with a meter running. Somebody else brought this **** up and I was just trying to demonstrate that I know a little bit about Vietnam.

Believe it or **** you. I don't care.

A friend of mine is in the final stages of cancer from the Gulf War (DU? Chemicals? Who knows). Very sad. And I still don't know what he did there.

I don't know what a ring knocker is BUT...you may have a point as he was a flight surgeon and flew on the b-52s to make $100/run. What bummed the old man out was they would have a bbq, and the next day 2 friends piloting f-4s who were there would be dead. he wont even go to the wall in DC because he gets so upset. I can't imagine.

One poignant thing my Grandfather used to say (he was shot down in WWII, West Point class 42, Luft III etc etc) "There is no difference between an officer and enlisted man when you are being shot at! It is quite a unifying experience." Classic!

Again, just throwing this crap out because it fascinates me. This thread is actually kinda taking a turn for the better....

TW, sorry about your friend.

Do you guys remember this post when we got patriotic last November, I still go to it and get choked up.

I believe Yankee was referring to my dad and your granddad who, as West Pointers, would have had academy rings. My dad mentioned to me that he took hi off only once, to put on his wedding ring, which is worn on the same finger but closer to the heart.

k911sc--sometimes I feel like that guy in the picture. That was one hard-to-watch movie.

It was only my personal experience--but West Pointers, who I admire, have a tendancy to stick together and cover for each other. Sometimes this is admirable but sometimes when there are men making life and death decisions in the field who have reached their Peter Principle--own level of incompetence--they got poor farm boys killed.

I saw it first hand as they rotated "leaders" in and out on a short-term basis getting "their tickets punched" for their personnel file and career.

I've visited the wall on several occasions. I first thought that having the names listed chronologically instead of alphabetical was stupid until my first visit. I thought I had a good idea what pain was until I started seeing those names.

You would probably think talking about this would help. I just don't know.
