Anyone interested in doing a group donation for Sudan relief?

Anyone interested in doing a group donation for Sudan relief?

If Pelican is already involved, POC or POA please let me know, I would like to start or take part of some form of assistance for what is going on in Sudan.

Come on BigRubber - that is not totally fair.. A lot of folks are giving this situation much thought and prayers for those poor souls. And many really dont know a thing.. This situation is not caused by a lack of money - but rather marauding slavers.

I think a plan of action is needed. How about some background about the situation? A donation to what group? What do they do? How do they do it? How about some good links?

I understand your post - What I find un-fair is the lack of Media around this catastrophy - The reason I don't add link is because I don't want to give a biased link. I would like for people to this out of their own heart.

But here is one anyhow -

you wanna see some irony? brj, your "how can my wife spend $500 on me, for my bday" thread is getting all sorts of action!

my girlfriend bought me a $65 - hammer for my b-day. and i spent a month's worth of saturdays, putting up fences for habitat for humanity. using that hammer.

i am with gaijinda, this isnt totally fair.

Yes, the US media are staying miles away from it.

Fror the most part, they don't think Americans can handle more than 4-5 big stories at a time. Heck, they're not talking about Afghanistan, either.

The key to sending aid is that it be part of a program that doesn't simply postpone an inevitable death. Have you chosen a relief agency to work through?

Only one that I KNOW is LEGIT is red cross, the thing with them is that you cant SPECIFY where the funds go.

I was looking to do a group thing - Since I don't have $$$ to send.

Ya it is fair, thoughts and prayers are great.. so is some green. All he asked is that we talk about what charity to use and what not.. so let's start talking.

My aunt has worked in several countries with the Christian Childrens Fund and I have no reservations using them, they seem like a great organization. I've heard good things about Mercy Corps too. I tend to avoid the Red Cross except to donate blood, my grandfather told me some pretty awful stories about them when he was in WW2, but he was kinda nuts so I dunno. Salvation Army? Discuss.

Red Cross is good with me.

Just as a personal rule, I don't give money to any religious-based charities in general, so that the money goes for aid, not religious materials.

I think the smaller organizations are best.

Exacly - I just want to help and save a child from the terrible death by starvation. I can not even begin to imagine the pain of dieing from it. I suffered starvation for 3 days once in my life (long story), it was the most painfull 3 days of my life ever. I could not wish that feeling on my worst enemy.

And when you think about it, just $14 per month is enough to feed a family of 3

All I can do is imagine how many lifes we could save if we do something together.

I'll pay for your gun and ammo if you go over there and take care of business. How's that?

Excuse me, our foster cat needs his post-op meds now.

I agree - This is why I would not post links. I didnt want to give any biased religious links.

Without endorsing the source, we can at least share information that the US media isn't disseminating...

Well, the UN is calling it the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. The US govt (amongst others) is contributing humanitarian aid. Seems to me they need food and medicine in the short term (plus their govt needs a good kick in the arse).

Bigrubber - its too hard for me from NZ. I'm going commit (right here and now) to contributing through a local aid agency. Where is the credit card?

That's great to hear Cameron. I am glad you are making a move to save a child's life. I guarantee you will sleep 1000 times better the night you make your donation. Just think, a poor child out there get to live and not suffer the pain of starvation because you made a small sacrifice.

Prop's to you!

I'm kind of in the same boat as Cam, since if I try to use the American Red Cross I get punted to the Canadian Red Cross. Do we use Paypal to get a fund going and then just make one big donation through what ever charity we decide to use? I don't know jack about Paypal. I think it would be nice to make one big donation on behalf of Pelican, rather than everyone doing their own thing.

As always, I just hope the money is getting there largely (somewhat) intact...
