look what I bought today

just bought this 86 944 today for $900. a few little dings here and there, torn seats and cracked dash but not in too bad of shape. Auto, a/c and sunroof.. I hope my 17 yr old daughter likes it. I bought it for her if her mother lets her take it. new tires, new stereo, new rack. new condensor. and best of all... it's drivable. crank it up and go!

That is a steal. Too bad 944 turbos can't be found that cheap.

Just drove it for the first time. pretty quick but needs a tuneup. got some clunks and noises but I'll work those out. fairly new goodyear 255's on rear. looks like 10 inch or so rims. girlfriend wants the car now..

Please tell me you're not seriously going to give that car to a 17-year-old kid. Truly a tragedy: it's a death sentence for that car; possibly for her as well.

Think about what you're doing.

Nice buy! I had a 944 for a year before the 911 bug bit, and I really enjoyed driving it. For $900, what's to lose?

And I think it will be fine for your daughter. Low power, neutral handling - what's not safe about that?

her mother probably won't let her have it anyway. Her mother only likes NEW cars. I bought her a 92 jeep for her 15th birthday and her mother wouldn't let her have that either guess I'll have to bite the bullet and drive it myself every now and then. My daughter can drive it when she comes visit me. better than letting her drive the 911. btw, I have let my daughter drive skidloaders, excavators, backhoes, Harley's, boats, etc. starting at 3 years old till now. she's a good kid.

johnco--I personally think what you're doing is fine. A NA 944 isn't any more dangerous than other cars. If your daughter is going to drive fast, she'll do it in mom's minivan too. My first car was a beat up, underpowered '81 Firebird. The suspension was shot, and it had rear drum brakes. I lost it on a highway going ~100MPH, but somehow recovered. The thing was all over the place. My next car was a '78 Buick LeSabre that could out run the Firebird any day. Again, I drove the snot out of it, and probably did some stupid things in it.

Your daughter could get up to high speeds these days in a Accord (sailin' at 115MPH in a friends car back in high school). At least the Porsche will maintain control if your daughter has a lapse in judgement.

Just make sure the steering, suspension, and brakes are in tip-top shape, and teach her the importance of safe driving. That's more important than buying her a "slow" car...which really doesn't exist.

Nice find by the way...

Amazing....I've never seen a decent 944 sell so cheap! What a great era of used sportscar deals we live it....

I recently saw an early 944 w/ a broken t-belt, a maaco paint job and valve damage sell for $1200 on ebay. I wanted it as a parts car but after it passed $700, it wasn't worth it.

Every new 944 owner should immediately change the t-belt. It is the car's largest design flaw.

Have fun, but I'm sure that if you ebay it, you'll get twice what you paid for it.

Congrats! Nice score!

That car looks really familiar. Did you find it in the Greenwell Springs/Central area of Baton Rouge?

actually I'm 80 miles south in Morgan City. bought the car after someone heard it was for sale, and called me. I just happened to know the person that had it when I went to see it. She was asking $1000. It needs some work, but the price was right. The owner had another one in better shape she might sell later. she also mentioned a parts car she had been getting parts from for this car.

ah. I understand. the reason why I asked was because I wanted to know why her mother had more of a right to determine what your daughter owns than you. I guess that would depend on the custody situation. there really isn't much that she can do in prohibiting your daughter to own a car. I'm not versed in Louisiana law but here in Washington a person at the age of 17 may own a vehicle. worst case sceario, you can always keep the car at your residence and let her drive it when she comes to visit
