Why Kerry?

I can't think of any good reasons so here's your chance. I don't want Bush bashing, I want legitimate reasons you think Kerry will make a good president. Tell me what you like about him and his policies.

How sad the liberals on this BBS can't seem to chime in and come up with at least 10 good reasons Sen. Kerry should be president.

Just face it, Sen. Kerry has no spine. Has no moral convictions, and has no position when it comes to the issues at hand. If you put him in front of a mexican crowd, he's for mexican issues. Put him on the pulpit in a black church, he's for black issues. Question him on the war against terrorism/war financing/taxes, he will tell you one thing, and then tell you another a short time later. His failure to win the presidency will be due to his indecisiveness and failure to gain the voters trust.

You've already made a decision about who Kerry is and nothing anybody says is going to change that, so why even have a thread about it? You don't want discussion, you want to tear people down, and nobody is interested in playing that game. So pat yourselves on the back, nobody else is going to.

Seriously, I'm still curious as to who he is. I realize he wants to change things the Bush Administration has initiated, but for some reason, how he'll change things is not resonating in me. I expect - and he should expect - to not redefine - but define himself tomorrow night. But in the meantime, Mat, if you have insight into what John Kerry stands for, please air it out. I'd like to know.

Its been quite a problem for the campaign as you probably already know. I think they really wanted to run an issues driven campaign and stay away from character attacks. Unfortunately that doesn't lend itself introducing a candidate because I think voters are equally as concerned about issues as they are the attitude of the candidate. Issues such as the war, the economy, etc, aren't really that interesting to talk about in and of themselves. Statistics don't grab you, numbers aren't interesting. Its when you start to place blame and outshine your opponent that peoples ears perk up because they want to see the response. I think BC'04 has done a really good job of avoiding the issues with smears against the Kerry camp and its been entertaining, but the issues remain.

Hey, American politics are rough and tumble, and a lot of voters want to see some action from the politicians, not the policies. Im with you DD, Kerry has some work to do with these debates. GW has given him plenty of stuff to pound on, but he needs to sell himself as much as he needs to sell his ideas.

Personally, I just like the guy. Do I want to hang out with him, grab a beer, talk about women and cars? Not really. He's running for president, he's got decisions to make, and its reassuring to me that he'll give a little thought to the issues before taking action.

Mat-
He can't run on his record because it's so diametrically opposed to what most of the country thinks, that he'd get clobbered without so much as one campaign ad by the RNC. Furthermore, he's said one thing and done another so many times in 20 years, he just doesn't build trust with most people. What's he left with? "I'm not Bush" and that's about the only thing you can reliably ascribe to him. You can't say for sure what he'd do, how he'd handle situations, nor if he's elected he wouldn't let the UN handle US security. There's just no way to tell. That's why you don't see ANY serious liberal replies to this post.

Mat,

You're right, I personally don't like the guy. However the purpose of this thread was to determine why liberals are voting for him, reasons other than they hate bush. I know it's simple, but that's all I asked.

Gosh, I'd really like to have a discussion like this but a few guys trying to have a productive discussion while the bulk of posters are deflecting, is just a recipe for frustration. Bottom line is that solving the kinds of problems we need to solve right now through our elected representatives is somewhat more complex than the deflections and sound bites that we're feeding to the electorate. I too wish Kerry and the democratic party would come out with a platform. I'd disagree with whoever said Kerry's position runs contrary to that of the American people. Indeed, this country appears to be roughly evenly divided, and in fact the liberal candidate received the majority of votes last time we went through this circus we call a "presidential election." I'd argue that the majority of Americans do in fact embrace much of the philosophy of the liberal party. And again, I hope that Kerry comes out swinging in terms of the fundamental differences between the conservative method of public administration versus the liberal model. But here, I've probably said too much. I'll check back to see who I've insulted this time.

To an extent, yes. But much of America is also focused on terrorism, whether for better or worse. And, as someone - you I think - stated, we are voting out of fear. Therefore fear and conservatism may go hand-in-hand, and this country is leaning conservative.

However, by '08, it might be a vastly different landscape.

Ok, ill throw down:

1. Kerry approaches issues with careful consideration
2. Kerry doesn't participate in smearing or distorting the facts
3. Kerry chose to fight in Vietnam
4. Kerry has seen the face of war firsthand
5. Kerry was, and is, an activist for issues that he believes in, tough issues that some don't want to hear
6. Kerry has led a clean campaign
7. Kerry has 20 years experience as a Senator and knows how the game is played
8. Kerry voted to support the President in an act of bipartisanship to use the power, only when absolutely needed, to bring the country to war.
9. Kerry has chosen a running mate with a record for helping the little people and who doesn't have relationships to companies that have hurt taxpayers and the environment.
10. Kerry has carried himself throughout this campaign with dignity, humility, and honor when his opponents have chosen to smear, slander, and skew his message.

and an additional few
11. Kerry knows what grammar is and isn't afraid to use it
12. Kerrys children aren't an embarrassment
