yeah, that thing could run you thousands to fix...but you can probably find a used one in the Recycler for .50 or so...give or take a dollar...

Nice car. Not a bad price at all. Personally I would consider spending a little more and buying a newer one with fewer miles, but for 10k you're getting a lot of car. Contrary to what some people are saying, the E-36 is considered to be quite reliable. My BMW mechanic has one and considers it "bomb-proof". If the car has been properly maintained it will continue to be a great, fast car for years. The most common problem I have heard of is that the oil sump bolts can come loose and mess things up. Check out some of the forums and you'll find out what typically needs addressing-differentials are not typically one of the items and people who have cars with 915 trannys shouldn't throw stones re: BMW synchros.
As far as repair expense-there are tons of independant BMW shops that do good work for reasonable prices. Parts are extremely cheap and plentiful for that car mainly because they made so any of them. Also, chances are good that it didn't hit "red-line" at every shift because it seems like every woman who wears Gucci has had a BMW-often times a coddled M3. Comparing the cost of ownership of an E-46 vs E-36 foolish for too many reasons to post here-totally different animal. I've owned many BMWs (no CSLs or M3s) over the past twenty years and I'm still an active BMWCCA member. I have only heard good things about the E-36 M3. It's a solid bet. However, a guy who is heir to a Jaguar dealership throne certainly knows well of cars that are costly to repair and depreciate rapidly  .

Guess I should've congratulated Thom before this whole thing whet on. So um...congrats Thom! I've always wanted one, but the 911 won over when I realized the E36 M3s were much more plentiful than '72 911s.
If resale value goes in the dumps? Let me know when you're ready to sell

Congrats Thom. $10.5K for a '95 M3 even w/137K miles is a great deal especially if it runs as good as it looks. I sold my '96 328 i convertible last year for $17.5K. It only had 60K miles so there was no way I'd let it go for less than that. A buddy of mine bought a '94 M3 with 120K miles for $13.5K and that car is in excellent shape.

I recommend changing the stakes to something more like dinner and a few drinks.. or maybe a set amount of cash.. seems foolish to gamble vehicles.. also would seem more sportsmanlike and gentlemanly to keep the race on a track.. specifically a short track (drag racing is kinda lame).. jmo.
the benz and bug would make for an interesting match..

Just got this month's Roundel. Seems no member in the classifieds is willing to sell their 95 M3 for under 18k. Maybe I underestimated the deal you're getting-not that Roundel classifieds is the bargain basement of BMWs. However, it does give you a feel for the marque. Roundel also reports that the new 5 series, this according to Kelly Blue Book, will be in the top 5 cars that hold their resale. Other BMWs are expected to do well also. How they can predict that I have no idea.
Giving it more thought, unless that car is a rat I don't see how you can lose. Good luck! On street racing-How can you speak of the virtues of high speed being the real deal and then want to race on the street? That's just unreasonable and downright dangerous-maybe homicidal. You better hope the lawyer representing the family of some kid you run over never sees this thread. |
