iPod Earbuds

I despise the earphones that come with the iPod. They simply don't fit my ears correctly and they don't really sound all that great ..... So anyway, I went out to Circuit City and bought the most expensive earbuds they sold - Sony something or other for $59. Mistake. They absolutely sounded like cheap tinny crap. So then I figured maybe I should just get it over with and plunk down the $300 for some Etymotics. But I decided to try one more. Bought some Phillips HE592's for $20 at Target ..... these things sound friggin' fantastic! Great base (for earbuds) and they've got some sort of "reflected-speaker design" that replicates surround sound. So I'm happy for now - at least until I demo a pair of Etymotics.

btw: How did I live without an iPod?

You forgot about how some "smart" criminals are going after people with those distinctive white headphones - at the least, a nice expensive gadget to pawn...

agree With you there, the earbuds are the worst.
I have some sony headphones don't remember the number but what an improvement.
Not that I approve this but...
Found this little app. for the Mac called ipodextractor. Lets you download music from the ipod to your computer nicely works well if you have more than one computer and works fast.

You won't regret it Art! I've also got the Altec-Lansing inMotion speaker system for desktop use - very nice sound.

Not only do the Apple earbuds sound bad, they also hurt. Mine broke after 1 year of use. But, the iPod itself, the eighth wonder of the world.

They've got a unique flexible case that's actually pretty easy to use as well.

I've got the apple in ear earbuds, much more comfy and the wound is wonderful. They come with three different sized rubber pieces so you can tailor them to your earhole. When I'm at home I hook it up to my Yamaha which is also wired to my JBL alien satelites with subwoofer oh so nice. The JBL alien setup is sold at the mac store, wonderful sound and they are very clean.

I love my iPod, keeps my songs, photoshop and illustrator files, contacts, other misc crap. If you really want one and want a deal go to the mac store and ask if they have any older models in the back. I bought a 20gig ipod with touchwheel with the 4 buttons below the screen, dock, wired controller, case, charger, fire wire and usb cable for 250

That's a great deal! I have the same model and the only way I got mine for the same price as you did w/those peripherals is through an employee discount. My wife's cousin's husband's brother works for Apple. What some people will do to get an iPod!

My wife bought me a pair of Shure E2c earphones last year for Xmas. Not heavy on the bass but very clear and good isolation. I'm very happy with them (especially since I'm not big on bass anyway).

They work great with the iPod.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones?

I've been looking for some competent, compact, and affordable noise-cancelling headphones, to use with my iPod on the subway, on flights, etc. I bought a $99 Sony model and returned it - weak bass, actually amplified some external noises. Anyone have a recommendation?

ha ha.

They did noticeably reduce low-frequency continuous noises, like the rumble of BART. What they seemed to do was amplify noises that weren't continuous, like people talking. That, plus the weak bass (had to use the equalizer on the iPod, which then eats up battery), made me decide this wasn't worth $99.

I'll pay $200 for good noise-cancelling headphones, but not $99 for crummy ones.

Shure and Etymotic each have their fans and foes.

I went with Shure since their lower-end earphones (E2c) are more rugged than the Etys (ER6) and I'm really abusive with my equipment. Plus they produce less microphonic noise due to the wire design.
