Well, after all of your "Island hopping", I would have to say there is no "know it all" on the subject of what is barbaric. I'm sure it is most closely defined by your local culture. Urban dwellers may very well consider hunting as barbaric, while people living in rural areas would consider it a way of life.
I'm also quite sure that inadvertant deaths due to the administration of corporal punishment are very common in the areas where it is used.

I am woundering how you managed to flip this into a political discussion? This is more fundamentalist religion and society-based.
