This is all very witty - but has not genetic research pointed to a small number of common ancestors? The whole Adam and Eve story might not be so far fetched...

Some of you know I have taught religious education at a Catholic church. One of the books I have used is entitled "Did Adam and Eve Have Belly Buttons." It is a collection of theological questions, and discussions. This question is nicely illustrative of an important principle in bible reading. The point is that if you get hung up on questions of biology (or physics or meteorology or.....) you're going to miss the real point.

We procreate. We "beget" each other. God Begot Jesus, so they are related. It's a family thing. By contrast, we are created creatures. Created by Him. That's an important distinction. Jesus is blood relation to God. We are not. We are His project. Like a track car. This has important theological implications.

I'd take a wild guess that Adam and Eve did not have belly buttons. But it wouldn't matter if they did. Similarly, I suspect that a "day" of creation was more than 24 standard hours. But again, it does not matter how long it took God to create the Universe. Getting hung up on those question is a trap.

The drive for artificial wombs was to increase the survival of premature babies. This was very successful and as with many things, the technology was put to other applications. An artificial womb is like a small fish filled with a special liquid and various lifesupport umbilicals for food and waste products. Although a-wombs are more commonly used for premature births and organ growing, there has been a few cases of them being used to grow babies totally in vitro. Some parents have had children from "tanks", but the costs involved make "natural" birth still very common.
Does anyone remember "nipple necks" or "tanks" from the TV show "Space Above & Beyond"?

Yep, less than 100,000 because of rapid climate change about 600,000 years ago, fuzzy memory, might have to correct these numbers upon some research.

Small = 1. I think it was the evaluation of mitochondrial DNA the led to the conclusion that all of Earth's current inhabitants are decendents of a single female who lived something like 30,000 years ago. That's about exactly how long ago Eve lived in a fully literal interpretation of geneology given in the bible. It's also about the place in history where the evolutionary disconnect is located.

Quote:
This means that all human mtDNA originated from a single ancestral lineage -- specifically, a single mother -- fairly recently and has been mutating ever since, producing the small diversity that exists throughout the human species. Most estimates of the mutation rate indicate an origin of about 200,000 years ago.
Quote:
Despite these criticisms, many geneticists continue to favor the Out of Africa model. Studies of nuclear DNA also suggest an African origin for other genes besides mtDNA. Furthermore, in a remarkable study, ancient mtDNA has been recovered from the original Neanderthal fossil find in Germany, and it does not closely match modern human mtDNA. This finding suggests that at least the population of this one Neanderthal had diverged from the lineage to modern humans by about 600,000 years ago.
Will we ever know for sure?

That's frightening, B. I'm gonna still be an out-of-control liberal maniac when you've posted some war mongering anti-social conservative dribble. But in the meantime, it's delightful that you imagine me to be sensible. Have you seen the "Conservative Christian?" thread?

you must remember that the leaves were not in use on adam and eve until they ate of the apple.

Did they have belly buttons what does it matter.

The big question is are you right with God

Wish I could be there. I'm actually fairly personable, and occasionally reasonable. Have a very blessed Christmas season, B. I think you may have some understanding of the unbearably beautiful love that He gives us, so I hope that touches you again. It's really unbearable when you catch a glimpse of it. Changes everything. As you may know.
