Toilet Technology?

Okay, I have finally reached the limit of my patience. I bought a house with a low flow, 1.6 GPF toilet and after three years I am just about ready to rip the GD thing out with my bare hands and smash it to bits. It clogs, it sprays water, it overflows. It drives me in-freaking-sane. It actually does everying except flush. At this point a plastic funnel stuck into an open drainage pipe would be preferable. I routinely have to fill a bucket of water to pour into the bowl just to get the worthless contraption to operate - which, of course, negates the whole purpose of having a low flow toilet to begin with.

So after three years of swearing and shaking my fist, I am going to replace the damned thing (or install a retrofit upgrade if any exists). So please help a brother out. Can anyone recommend a really good product as either a replacement or fix? I swear if that evil, pathetic, capricious thing floods my bathroom just one more time the porcelain will be flying!!

I hate my toilet. HATE. It is a very strong word. I do not like to HATE. But I do HATE my toilet.

HATE.

There is a thing you can buy for about $300 that will fit inside the tank and pressurize the water. You will then get one of those men's room type flushes out of your toilet. I don't know what effect it has on the pipes, but my uncle has one and it works.

Toto brand with flush assist. Besides being relatively attractive the loudness of the flush wont scare the crap out of you....pun intended

Here's a guy who's been rating low flow units for quite a while. They even have a Forum. LOL

This is a funny thread.

Sorry Janus, I feel your pain. I don't like to hate things either. Sometimes inanimate (porcelain) objects need to be thrown Please take pictures and post!

Heh heh, Many years ago I worked at American Standard. The engineers would go out with us IT guys occasionally to drink. If I could only tell ya some of the stuff they did to test toilets.......

LMAO. This might possibly be the most hilarious thread I have read in ages around here. Janus, I HATE MY TOILET TOO. I just never thought to actually post it here and get some help. Thanks for not taking any more CRAP and DOing something about it.

And, someone having a toilet forum, that is the funniest thing I have ever heard.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul!

What's the penalty if you're caught smuggling a 3 gpf toilet from Canada? Gotta be kinda hard to conceal!

I hear that the black market for hi-flow toilets is booming nowadays.

I never had problems with my 1.6 liter toilets until my son became a teenager.

He eats more than most large circus animals and gets predictable digestive results. I swear he could clog the Alaska pipeline. 1.6 liters? Those engineers never had a teenage son.

This old house still has the old-fashoned water-wasters, the noise could wake the dead but I guess loud is better than an under-achiever.
I guess these new fangled water savers have brought us a long way. 1.6 per flush but it take 3 rounds to clear out?

Is it possible that the problem isn't the toilet? Any number of outflow problems could slow a good toilet down, including poor plumbing during construction, also a blocked vent can give the best stool a case of constipation (bird nest).

Funny thing. A few years ago our city (Santa Rosa) was offering free low flow toilets if you turned in your old high flow ones. We jumped on it and replaced all toilets. The ones they gave us where Toto. They are awsome! They even worked better than our old ones, and there were two teenage boys living in the house too! Go for a Toto or head for the blackmarket.

Ever see the Seinfeld episode where Kramer got the black market showerhead? Pure comedy!

Another thing to think about. Has the toilet design changed in the last 40 or so years? Other than the one with the presured tanks that are normally used in comerical settings, they all have the little floating ball with the plunger. I think it's one of the things that we use day to day that has changed the least over time.

4 Words: road trip to Canada. It is unfriggin' believable to me that our government has become so obtrusive as to actually govern the design of toilets (and now washing machines as well!!). Wonder if the founding fathers had this in mind some 200 years ago ......

Anyway, it is perfectly legal to 'import' a crapper from Canada, as long as it is for personal use ..... well maybe I should rephrase that and say non-commercial use. I've done it several times. Told the customs officer I was going to buy a toilet and would be back across the border in about 25 minutes. He said it happens frequently. I had a bathroom remodeled a few years ago and the very first time the toilet was used it plugged up. This was supposedly one of the better 1.6 ones. I was on my way to Canada the next day (only about an hour or so away).

I once saw a documentry on ancient Greece, they had rows of stone "holes". It was theorized that taking a dump was also a social gathering.

Same here; we had to replace one of the toilets a couple years ago and the new one sucks. Or, doesn't suck is more like it. A plunger is close at hand 24x7...

My parents installed the pressurized ones (unsure of brand) and that is clearly the way to go.

I also recommend TOTO crappers! There a little pricey, but worth it!

Try using one of these which are in the public buildings in China. They can be particularly entertaining if you've had some dodgy seafood the night before !!

A few years ago my father gained control of about 20 free 3GPF toilets. He thought he could sell them and make a good profit since everyone hates the pansy toilets. He ended up only selling about 1 or so. He donated the rest to aa friend's church that was building a camp. Only in Tennessee my friends. That is why I love it here.
