I'm not clear on the husband's stake in the matter.
|
What disturbs me is the insistence for Congress to involve itself in this. These two-bit corrupt senators like Tom DeLay who should be more interested in his unethical behavior than this subject, should shut the hell up and leave it as a family decision.
But it doesn't surprise me how desperate these lawmakers are. Anything for limelight and a push of political agenda. First baseball and now a woman in a pesistent vegetative state. |

My reaction is this is a private matter for the family, and unfortunately for the judge who was handed the unpleasant job of sorting out the evidence.
The more that other people get involved, the less it becomes about this woman and the more it becomes about furthering different groups' political agendas. The idea of the Florida Legislature and the US Congress trying to pass legislation mandating what will or won't be done is disgusting. Do you think some US Senator gives a damn about this woman or her husband or her parents? He's doing it because he'll get brownie points from a bunch of special interest groups. Some political operative somewhere is preparing fundraising campaigns and attack ads to exploit the situation. If I knew that I was going to end up like this woman, I would want the decision to be made by my family - even if they fought about it, and the final decision wasn't the one I would have chosen - rather than a horde of political opportunists. |
Interesting read. Seems the husband did give her the needed medical attention she need back in 90, but once he received a settlement in 93, he stopped everything.

I live in Tampa so the local news have been covering this for years. Locally there has been a lot more details/rumors/BS to come out but you really can't believe anything you hear anymore. Her parents have made it very personal against the husband. They have gone on TV and have slammed the husband from day one and it just gets worst. It isn't about Terry anymore it is all against the husband. This has grown into a media circus brought on by her parents.
It really comes done to who you believe. Do you think Terry and her husband had a discussion about this and he is trying to do what she wants. Or you don't believe it. The video the parents have released to the press is how old? A year? 5 years? Taken a day after her stroke? The father was asked that on a local radio show and won't answer it. Is that five second clip taken from how many hours of video? They won't say. Anyone seen a current picture of her? I find it odd that the Right wants less goverment involvement in your personel life but they want to pass a law taking away your right and your legal gardian's rights to allow you to do what you want. What does this have to do with the "Right To LIfe" crowd? She has lived her life and has told her husband she doen't want to live like this. It has gone though the courts. The experts have testified she will not recover. What about heaven being a better place? Doesn't the Right believe this? I do. Let her go. Allow her organs to be donated and give life to others. Her's is over. Paul |

In the last month the parents even tried to get a divorce for her. Without her consent. How do you do that? They said she won't want to be married any more. .......WTF? |
Her husband forfeited the right to have a say in this matter when he fathered children with another woman, in my opinion. If he wanted to move on with his life, that's fine, he has the right to continue living. But by doing so, I really believe he shouldn't be able to effectively kill her.
We don't even starve our prisoners to death. Death row inmates get review after review after review, and almost never actually face the death penalty--especially in a place like Cali. Her husband claims that she told him that she wouldn't want to live as she is, but there's no proof to back that up. |

this thing is weird. has anyone run a brain-scan on this woman? is she a veg, or w/o motor fuction? |
The court appointed doctors all testifed that there is no chance that she could ever regain any cognitive function. She has been on a feeding tube for 15 years. Anyway you want to paint the husband, the easy road for him would have been to walk away from this a long time ago. He has convictions about what he believes she would have wanted and what she expressed to him. I am sure many others have expressed similar feelings to your loved ones if you felt similarly. What other possible motivation do you think Shiavo has? She has not had any cognitive brain function (except that claimed by her parents, which no doctor has ever verified). I am glad that my wife and I have living wills but if we didn't I sure hope my wife would have the strength and fortitude this husband has shown. This lady "died" 15 years ago, God bless her, her family, her husband and his family. This is an aweful situation no matter which "side" of the issue you find yourself on.

Well said Bill. It would seem us locals have a different POV than the others.
The fact is that the guy has stayed with her all these years and has had the same reason for it from day one. He could have given her back to her parents but he hasn't. He's been offered millions and he has said no. The fact that he has had kids with someone else says to me that he is trying to get on with his life. Did you know he named his kid Terry in honor of his wife? |
The recent actions of Congress illustrate their contempt for Constitutional law.
This is a matter properly decided by the State of Florida as provided for in our U.S. Constitution. Yet another opportunity for the imperialist federal government to trample State's rights and buy some votes. Furthermore, it reflects the continued irrelevance of the man as head of household. His worth is determined by cash flow; not values, leadership, or sacrifice. |

As far as starving do death..yes that's not a good thing....and we treat our animals more humanely to end their suffering than we do animals. However, I read that her cortex is wasted and that she won't even know she's starving...there is nothing to process the pain associated with same. |

definitely time to cut her loose. . . .unless the hospital needs the customer. . . for another 15 years. |
The system has worked, they have analyzed the law all the way to the supreme court and because her husband was her guardian at the time of injury, it is his decision to make.
It's a vey very sad, horrible situation and I honestly don't like to think about it because I'm one who loves life, I can't kill even a bug, and the thought of people hurt and killed saddens me. I also cannot imagine having to live like that. No thank you. But I feel the system in America the way it is needs to be upheld. Bottom line for me? EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A LIVING WILL! If congress wants to pass even MORE laws....let's pass that one. You have to register for Selective Service, the same day you get a living will. If you think differently as you get older, you can change it. |
As far as i'm concerned , she's been dead for 15 years. Without your brain, you're merely a vegetable with no hope. They're putting her through all this misery for nothing. And now Congress is getting involved for political reasons. what a joke.
I say let the woman rest in peace, some things like severe brain damage are just irreversible. what kind of a miserable life is getting fed through a small plastic catheter. sometimes death is better. |
For certain members of Congress, this, and the baseball steroid freak show, are perfect diversions from deficit and ethics investigation issues.
