Rear Lid keeps popping up. Any advice?
The rear lid on my 83sc keeps popping up after a drive. I keep having to close it back down.
Any good fixes? I tried realigning the lid but nothing. |

I adjusted my latch but, also pulled out one of the new lid shocks and put older weak one in. Damon's idea. That helps keep it down and there is still plenty to hold it up

I had the same issue and finally just disconnected the rear hood shock. Today I reconnected it after two years and drove a little and the lid didn't pop open, so maybe that worked? I never could readjust the latch properly...

I disconnected my lid shock last year because it kept poping up (half a pool cue stick worked). This spring I finally noticed the allen nuts holding the hinges on- were loose. I tightened them, and no more problems.......after almost locking myself out by not lining it up right.
I could of swore that I checked those nuts when I took the old A/C condensor off last year.

I had the same problem too. Just adjust the latch and you are done. With my latch, someone has greased it, which made the cable slip, so I just bent the remainder of the cable upward into an elbow so that no slipping would occur. It has worked fine so far!
Hope this helps.

The latch is probably the least complicated part of your car...

If after adjusting the latch, the hood still pops, take a close look at the bottom mechanism.
Disconnect the cable lock so you can move the arm back and forth. Look at the middle of the latch receptacle. Move the arm back and forth and you'll see the portion of the mechanism that catches the latch pin increases and decreases as the arm moves from one extreme to the other. Adjust the cable so the maximum amount of metal catches the pin. Sorry about the poor description (from memory of mine popping for a long time before I discovered the solution). Sherwood |

Just remember if you f- it up, you have to take off the muffler to get it back open.

Take your time to understand how the latch works and be sure the engine lid pull opens the latch enough so that the lid will open again. Messing it up and being unable to open the lid is worse than having the lid pop up.

Install a wing - the extra weight will keep it down.

Remove your rear grill and get your AC condensor unfastened from it before you go tinkering with the latch adjustment. That way you can reach your arm through the opening with a 10mm wrench if the latch gets jammed during adjustment...
