Boston

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-24-2005 03:08 PM

OH I almost forgot my NO.1 band I hate

Styx

God that's terrible music... Miss America's kind of cool, but man, Tommy Shaw REALLY should have been in another band

dd74 05-24-2005 03:09 PM

Ashley Simpson - WTF? Who is this biatch?

Conversely: New Order, Joy Division, Echo and The Bunnymen, and of course, Roxy Music.

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-24-2005 03:15 PM

LOL, Pantera.. Jesus...

My little brother likes Pantera. Hence, i took him to see them live. Talk about a aura of violence... It was like 10,000 mulleted speed freaks in one room... I'm not susrprised Dimebag got killed...

How about Phillip Glass for that matter?

although Koyaanisqatsi was pretty cool......

dd74 05-24-2005 03:23 PM

Guest appearances I'd like to see:

Johnny Rotten singing lead for Air Supply.

Drago 05-24-2005 03:24 PM

Loverboy...no self-respecting dude should wear red leather pants.

Ratt

Wham

Asia

Wang Chung

Journey

dd74 05-24-2005 03:40 PM

P-Funk (as in Parliament), predates all that crappy rap crud - and is some of the best dance music around.

Here's some more of its ilk:

1) Sugarhill Gang
2) Ohio Players
3) Gap Band

...yeeeeaahhh baby...

So it must be the red leather pants thing then cause all the bands you list wore them :)

I never got Jethro "aqua lung" Tull.

Why so much of the '80s music is so unmemorable:
Check out these lyrics from an '80s iconic leader...

Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart

I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Watch you live and breathe your storylines

(And) I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Keep track of the visions in my eyes

While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security (has)
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no
Don't masquerade with the guy in shades, oh no
I can't believe it
You got it made with the guy in shades, oh no

(And) I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Forget my name while you collect your claim

And I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
See the light that's right before my eyes

While she's deceiving me
She cuts my security (has)
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no
Don't masquerade with the guy in shades, oh no
I can't believe it!
Don't be afraid of the guy in shades, oh no
It can't escape you
'Cause you got it made with the guy in shades, oh no

I said I wear my sunglasses
I wear my sunglasses at night
Wear my sunglasses at night...

I thought we purchased Porsches so that we can get someone else to Wang our Chungs?

dd74 05-24-2005 04:02 PM

Originally, the second n in "Wang Chung" was not supposed to be part of the band's name. Industry standards, you know...

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-24-2005 04:09 PM

Im a bit alarmed that you actually know that David

While I'm venting, the whole screaming heavy metal thing never made much sense to me either. There's a Norwegian metal band with some roots in jazz that's pretty good, but most of the rest of it just sounds like raw noise to me.

lowyder993s 05-24-2005 06:03 PM

Most everything you guys hate, I hate too.
As far as what I like...Sublime...Bradley really F/Ued...I'd kill to play that way AND sing scat at the same time.
BTW...any of the LA crowd check out a play based on Bradley...I saw a little blurb on it somewhere, but never heard anything else.
Hauling out to the Vegas club race a couple weeks ago, my brother is giving me $hit cuz my pod is filled w/ Pennywise, Millencolin, New Found Glory, MXPX, Unwritten Law and Agent Orange. Can't help it tho...that stuff makes you WANT to bury the right pedal.

dd74 05-24-2005 06:25 PM

This is Slymenstra Hymen from GWAR...

gassy 05-24-2005 06:49 PM

Ok, gotta post...
In keeping with the original topic, I don't get...
"New" Country...sux.
Stuff on my iPod...
Zeppelin
Rush...Dude, listen to it loud...You all should bow down during Red Barchetta...some of you know what I mean...
The Shins
Flaming Lips
Sublime
Kraftwerk/The album Autobahn. You own a p-car and you don't have this album?
Modest Mouse...the earlier stuff.
Van Halen (early and a few with Sammy)

DD- I just knew you couldn't be all bad!:D

I have to admit, every once in a while I dust off an old KMFDM cd for a late night drive in my 930... something about it seems so right!

gassy 05-24-2005 06:54 PM

Forgot Beck--Yeah, it is music.

URY914 05-24-2005 06:55 PM

How about anyone that doesn't use his/her real name.

You know what I mean

Madonna. Yeah, but she's all marketing, music and re-invention. Three reasons why she's probably close to a billionaire. As for her music - she's so widespread in genres, it's sort of hard to not like everything she's done.

Reg Dwight did the same thing - but we all know who that is, right?

CMON man its GWAR!!!!!!!

take it you never saw them live.. Kind of the same fun as seeing KISS or Alice Cooper..., Except you get blood and other bodily fluids sprayed all over you...

elwood-914 05-24-2005 08:33 PM

Boston, liked them in high school but all the songs sound alike.

Dead, never understood them.

Air supply, ABBA,

And how come no one yet has mentioned YOKO:eek:

Christien 05-24-2005 09:11 PM

Hmm, nobody's mentioned it, so I'll throw it out there:
NIRVANA. Honestly, just *****. Sorry if anyone takes offence, but as far as I'm concerned, Nirvana proved once and for all that advertising can sell ANYTHING. They weren't soulful, Kurt Cobain wasn't a visionary, he was a junkie who couldn't play guitar to save his life.

The local "new rock" radio station has a weekly show called the Ongoing History of New Music, which, more often than not, is a great show. Not always though - last week they had one of those "top ten" lists - top 10 most important moments in rock history. They had some pretty cool moments in there, like the Sex Pistols on the Bill Grundy show, but #1 was Kurt Cobain's suicide. Give me a break.

Some of the better stuff I've spinning a lot of lately:

The Clash - quite simply, the best band that ever existed, IMO. They had it all. I think Joe Strummer probably had more soul than any other white guy that ever lived. I was lucky enough to catch him playing in Montreal in 2000 - best concert I've ever seen, and probably ever will see. The only person I've ever NOT known personally whose death really upset me.
The Damned - classic punk with a little vaudeville thrown in, but with an "artsy" twist.
The Transplants - sure, most of their album is filler, leaving only 4 or 5 good tracks, but they are definitely doing something different and original. Most of the lyrics are inane, but it's good music.

I'm also into contemporary "classical" music, so my tastes are pretty messed up :-)

And for a guilty pleasure, Van Halen (yeah, that's kind of embarassing, but what can I say, I grew up in the 80s)

Chris

...and Cobain's widow's group, Hole, pretty much sucks too. And look at her: a junkie mother.

Contemporary "classic"? Would that be Men Without Hats?
:D

ShApE 05-24-2005 10:31 PM

ok who said they didn't get sublime? how can you not like/get sublime?!?! it's some of the most chilled-out and amazing music ever..

dtw 05-24-2005 10:34 PM

Don't get: Led Zep (ducking) with a few exceptions (LOVE Kashmir) - maybe I just heard too much of it as a teen on the classic rock station...
-Greenday - it's decent garage rock and plenty listenable, and I can even overlook the Bush bashing - but c'mon, "Best Rock Album"? Gimme a break.
-Springsteen
-Stones - I see the genius, but it doesn't do much for me.
-Others falling into the plenty-listenable-but-way-overhyped-in-my-book: Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam

Stuff I love:
-Yes- By far my favorite, and I like just about all their material from 1969 - 2005. I have just about everything they've ever released, plus plenty of bootleg CDs, videos, and 10gb of bootleg concert MP3s (before anyone starts yammering about stealing - please note no-one my age is likely to have spent as much money supporting this band...I've bought dozens of concert tickets - from 100% legit sources.)
-Metallica - Say what you want about Ulrich and Hetfield, they've always rocked and they're great, enthusiastic musicians
-Dream Theater - Cutting edge of prog. Finally saw them in concert last year. Great stuff.
-King Crimson - One, one too many, schizophrenic tendencies.... If you "get it", you get it...
-Audioslave - Great modern rock. Chris Cornell has found his band. Though, I'm a little unsure about the new album... "Be Yourself" falls flat with me
-Aerosmith - mebbe because I had Tyler's eye doctor while I was in college? Who knows - I enjoy good enthusiastic rock...which brings me to my last thought-of-the-night-before-bed (donning flak jacket):
-Creed!

cantdrv55 05-24-2005 11:08 PM

I know I'm going to get it for this but I still really like old Madonna stuff. Hey, I danced to it in the '80s and when I hear it now and then, it still gets me movin'. Not all '80s music was bad, you know.

Aw come on cantdrv55! When I was building my house, my in-laws stopped by and "Like a virgin" came on the radio. I was motified! Couldn't turn it off fast enough.
