Sounds like we have started a blues fire here.

chapstic2001 05-26-2005 01:32 PM

How about Ted Nugent (sp?). Him and David Lee Roth I don't get.

Drago 05-26-2005 02:14 PM

That little bald chick....what's her name???

Sinead O'Connor. I certainly don't get her.

BTW, what's not to get with Terrible Ted and Balding Dave...they seem pretty straight forward to me. ;)

If Americans are idiots then don't tour here or sell your albums here.

You took American Idiot to heart, when you shouldn't have. It had to do with American Idol and other stupid reality shows that have American's, literally, glued to their TV sets.

We're not the ones who're meant to follow...............

It's going out to idiot America.

I happen to agree whole heartedly..... The only thing I've seen on the news has been the reports of what's-her-name winning at American Idol last night......

Gotta say I love the new NIN album. I'm a little closer to Trent's age, and I see it as he is looking back on his life. There was a time when we were on top of the world. Then, life gets in the way, and before we realize it, we are past our prime, and we look back on those days, and miss them. It kinda hits home for me.

Other bands I get:

NIN: Turn your anger into a primal scream before you hurt someone. I get that..........

Marilyn Manson : thought anti-christ was brilliant. He is proof that no matter how sane someone is, preconceived notions will prevent 99% of the population from hearing your message based on what they've "heard". I remember an interview after all of the school shootings, the reporter was trying to hang it on him. The reporter asked what he would have done if his son would have been one of the shooters. His reply was that he would have LISTENED to him before it ever got that point, unlike the parents. The reporter was flabbergasted.

Tool: (See The Marz Volta) Very deep and intelligent lyrics.

T

You mentioned Tool, but not Maynard's most current work with APC(A Perfect Circle). I love the old Tool and the APC stuff.

MManson...... Gotta thank Trent Reznor for this one. Most people don't like Manson based on media and looks alone, but if you like NIN, you gotta give Manson a chance.

NIN I consider the best band out there. His musical talents, song writing, and diversity are unmatched IMO. I have probably owned 6 to 10 copies of "Pretty Hate Machine", due to them being stolen or scratched, and the first copy I got when it first came out. I was a little disapointed with the album "The Downward Spiral", due to 'Closer' getting so much air-play and club play, I almost thought he had sold out for a more mainstream paycheck, but I forgave him when "The Fragile" came out.

I am enjoying "With Teeth", as it's got that edge that "Broken" had. It might be a little more mainstream sounding, but lyrics wise, it's still hardcore. Most people would likely nod along and sing the chorus to "Hand that feeds" without once even guessing at it's anti-religious undertones and lyrics.

Well said..

I like to think that in the same way that Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zep 4 are the iconic albums of my dad's generation, The Downward Spiral along with Radiohead's OK Computer are the defining albums of my generation.

BTW, I have every single "Halo" NIN ever put out, along with the Broken movie....

targa911S 05-26-2005 06:11 PM

I knew Trent when he played in a disco band in Cleveland......he doesn't say much about that.

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-26-2005 06:56 PM

Im quite sure that a lot of his "image" is PR suggestion

Sonic dB 02-23-2008 12:28 AM

Came across this old thread tonight...wow... all i can say is that i like at least something from most of the bands that everyone doesnt get...and i cant stand most of the bands that everyone is touting as great here. lol, most of those are the music i grew up with though

who has come out in the past 3 years that people dont get now?

K. Roman 02-23-2008 03:23 AM

I hate music. Talk radio is the only medium that moves me. And books on tape!

Buckterrier 02-23-2008 03:46 AM

I don't get all the new, what's called rock-n-roll. System of the down, Disturbed. I like the music but don't get the anger. I was in a record store and asked the kid behind the counter what was all the anger about? He just looked at me with a daze and said, "I don't know dude"

svandamme 02-23-2008 03:54 AM

Mariah Carey
Kanye "i can ripp off any tune and sell it again just like P Diddy did" West
P "I ripped off any tune and repackaged it, showed Kanye West how to do it" Diddy
Paris " i got a lazy eye , not tits and a talent for porn if only i'd just get off my ass, and go out to buy me a double D chest" Hilton
Celine Dion
Live
Morrison and at the same time, the Smiths
Jeff Buckley

the stuff they call R&B these days: News Flash ! it aint Rhythm & Blues if it ain't got guitar's in it and is mostly commercial synthesized crap with a pretty face&voice to sell it
The correct term is "urban contemporary music" or as i call it "urban contemporary crap".

Buckterrier 02-23-2008 04:05 AM

ANY artist that butchers the American national anthem, (Mariah Carey's it).

Mariah actually has a very good voice. I mean she's no (insert your favorite artist here) but...

Hate me now.

I think you meant Morrissey.

I can totally understand why folks hate him. But, I don't know, whenever I hear one of his songs it takes me back to 1985-1986 when I first moved to Melbourne, Florida. I took up surfing, took 6 months off from life at the ripe age of 19-20 and just became a beach bum for a while. I was totally submerged in the entire surfer lifestyle, had tons of fun friends and just had a good time. Probably some of the best memories I had. I used to listen to a local college radio station and all they played was this kind of music, the whole "alternative" catalog if you will.

So while I understand how you can hate Morrissey and the Smiths, their music always puts a smile on my face. Sort of like when some 50's music comes on and my dad likes it.

berettafan 02-23-2008 05:20 AM

interesting thread!

Nugent.
Clapton to some extent (decent stuff but certainly not great for me)
99.9% of rap TODAY. (enjoy old LL, EZ, Beasties of course)
Joplin
Meatloaf
70% of the blues music i've heard.
Seger
anything in the 'new age' section
Dead (kinda sorta though that ashes, ashes tune is pretty catchy)
Pearl Jam (i know it's okay stuff but how they got radio play with their pop nonsense when Chris Cornell was out there make REAL music with soul i'll never get).
Country music
REM (lord it hurts when i hear their stuff!)
Anything Lennon had too much influence one. McCartny however, now there is a man with an ear!

imcarthur 02-23-2008 05:24 AM

Many of my favorite 'recording artists you just do not get' have been mentioned already . . . but these have always made me dive for a new preset:

Creedance - go back to the bayou & throw away the master tapes.
Blood, Sweat & Tears - spin away silently please.
99% of classical music written after 1900 - just shred the scores.

Ian

berettafan 02-23-2008 05:26 AM

and x's 1000000000000000 on not getting Dave Matthews.

berettafan 02-23-2008 05:31 AM

Agree w/ the earlier comment that Rush needs to be played LOUD to get it.

Amazing how clean it is but it still rocks!

Basically, all rap. If the sampler had not been invented, there would be no rap. Any metal music where some supposedly angst ridden nimrod with the microphone in his mouth, screaming, has been substituted for singing.

t951 02-23-2008 06:42 AM

U2- Worst band ever. Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
Bruce Springsteen. Sounds like a drunk trying to talk. Marketed the patriotism thing well tho.
Elton John.
Green Day. All their winy songs sound the same.
Country Music. Except the song The Gambler.

Now great bands are tougher.

Pink Floyd. Truly layered and deep music.
LedZep. Fantastic blues tributes and variation.
Aerosmith.
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Eric Clapton.

Mule 02-23-2008 07:33 AM

I never was real high on U2, less so on Greenday. When the Saints played Atlanta for the Superdome re-opener & Bono & Greenday did When September comes & then The Saints Are Coming, everybody had chills. I still play the live version of The Saints Are Coming commonly.

VINMAN 02-23-2008 09:35 AM

Radiohead. I dont get it. They are horrible. The most confusing thing is, they have that whole cult following.

scottmandue 02-23-2008 09:39 AM

And that Beethoven guy... WTF was he thinking!

+1 on not have heard or knowing of half the bands you guys are talking about.

Also nice to see we can all agree about disagreeing. I don't think there is a band or artist listed here that has not been equally praised and damned in this thread!

I'm a member of that "cult". :)

I can understand what you are saying though; their albums Kid A and Amnesiac are not very accessible.

I liken it to acquiring a taste for scotch or tequila taken straight up - as a kid these liquors tasted like gasoline. But to some, eventually, the taste becomes sublime and complex. :D

Best,

Kurt

Racerbvd 02-23-2008 09:44 AM

Most rappers, but they don't count as their aren't artist:p
Just because some think graffiti is art, doesn't change the fact that it is really vandalism;)

I say give em all guns & lock em in a room, that would take a lot of crime off the streets.

scottmandue 02-23-2008 09:46 AM

Why do rappers always look so pissed off?

Because they know they can't sing!

kstar 02-23-2008 09:48 AM

Here's good example of Radiohead. I had this album (Amnesiac) years ago and never could get into it. I started listening to it again after I got their new album In Rainbows.

Pyramid Song just blows me away; it's like music from another world, IMO. Brilliant.

FWIW.

I'm sure I am going to get flamed for this, but two that I absolutely loath are:
1. Pink Floyd
Absolutely hate their music. Being a non-drug user my entire life I've always felt the only way anyone could stand their music was if they were high. Weird too because I'm really into old rock, give me AC/DC, Zepplin, etc. just please leave out the Floyd.

2. Santana, eh a 2 year old could make the obnoxious noise he makes come out of a guitar. I know some people love him, but he just annoys me.

Sure I can't stand all the rap, and britney spears, but they never come on the stations I listen to. If I could have 2 bands that never ever came on the radio again, Flyod and Santana.

One Modern band I think is decent is Ryan Adams:

I do not like rap either, but "I ahe to admit to liking this song from Florida...... ah excuse me... Flo Rida. I hated the song until I saw Travis Barker lay down this tract for Florida's.... ah I mean Flor Rida's song Low.

No doubt she has a good voice, that's kind of the point. She doesn't need to...
"And the homuhoooooohhhhwhhhaaaaaaaaaawheeeeeeeeeeeaoooooom e of the brrrrrrraaaaawhheeeeeeeahhhhhhwhhhhoooooooaaaaave"

I agree, Kurt. That is a beautiful song.
I tried to not like Radiohead for years. They are intentionally difficult and their music often lacks a sense of joy -- always dark and melancholic. But they are one of the best bands on the planet.

pwd72s 02-23-2008 07:06 PM

Youth! Wish I could take you all back to the 50's...twirling the dial on my 5 tube bedroom radio...when I heard little richard for the first time. My radio dial stayed locked on to that station...Static galore, since the signal was far away. for quite some time. Pat Boone cover songs on the local station didn't cut it with me.

the 02-23-2008 07:08 PM

2 biggest ones I don't get (or think are overrated) are for sure the Grateful Dead and the Doors.

The Dead I just don't get, but I guess I can see how others might.

The Doors, I just can't see how anyone could enjoy listening to those grating, never-ending, repetitious electric organ (or whatever that gawdawful thing is) solos.

I stopped paying attention to Radiohead when Kid A came out, but you should give The Bends a listen. One of the best, true rock and roll albums of the '90's. Songwriting, production, instrumentation, etc., are superb.

Jared at Pelican Parts 02-23-2008 10:35 PM

R.E.M. pretentious and boring. I also can't stand Michael Stipe's voice.

Kid A and Amnesiac are incredible albums, btw.

"The national Anthem" "Pyramid Song" and "You and whose army" in particular.
