Hey, I actually went to a Madonna concert in the early 80's with our high school chicks. Guess who opened for them......The Beastie Boys. What was I on back then?

For some reason, I don't understand any woman recording artists. Half of them sound like angry lesbians, then the other half sound like they are just mad at their fathers. Anyone who doesn't fit into those two categories is probably one of these cookie-cutter pop stars, like britney, aguilera, j-lo, whatever. No talent, no originality, nothing but fake boobs and processed garbage that they call music. I don't get how anyone actually likes this crap.

Edit: WTF is up with Dave Matthews Band anyway? Everybody loves them, but I can't stand that garbage. They're almost as bad as Nickelback. Has everyone figured out by now that Nickelback found the formula for the perfect song? If you play two nickelback songs over the top of each other, they sound EXACTLY the same. Listen to this: http://www.squizzle.com/sound/nickelbacksucks.mp3

OTher than that, I respect most all music. Although I'm not old enough, I think all classic rock just kicks ass.

I agree, and work hard to find female vocalists that break the mold. In my book, some shining examples are:
-Shakira - Latin with heavy classic rock influence. And she's really hot
-Sarah McLachlan - except for her latest album, which is a snooze
-Edie Brickell - except for her latest album, which is a snooze
-Natalie Merchant - superb

Biggest disappointment/waste of stunning voice: Mariah Carey

I'm not that old (26) and I don't get them. Beck I half-get. Tori Amos to me is the Lifetime channel set to music. Björk is just plain weird. She's cut from the same thread as Yoko Ono. It's all about being different for the sake of being different, even if all you produce is crap.

Yes, the old school punk. When I started getting into music in the begining of MY teen years, those groups above are the groups I got into , along with many others. Then got into metal .

I liked AFI's newest effort, Sing The Sorrow. That album is worth a listen.

Pantera was the ****. Dime and Vinnie and Rex are/were great guys, Phil was a frucktard. Vinnie is a great drummer (for Metal) and Dime was a great guitar player. The guy who killed Dime was NOT a fan. He was pissed because he thought Dime broke apart Pantera, when infact it was Phils bullchit. The crowd, thats typical with Pantera, or any other "metal" band. Slam dancing or moshing as its called.

-Greenday - it's decent garage rock and plenty listenable, and I can even overlook the Bush bashing - but c'mon, "Best Rock Album"? Gimme a break.
-Springsteen
-Stones - I see the genius, but it doesn't do much for me.
-Others falling into the plenty-listenable-but-way-overhyped-in-my-book: Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam

Stuff I love:
-Yes- By far my favorite, and I like just about all their material from 1969 - 2005. I have just about everything they've ever released, plus plenty of bootleg CDs, videos, and 10gb of bootleg concert MP3s (before anyone starts yammering about stealing - please note no-one my age is likely to have spent as much money supporting this band...I've bought dozens of concert tickets - from 100% legit sources.)
-Metallica - Say what you want about Ulrich and Hetfield, they've always rocked and they're great, enthusiastic musicians
-Dream Theater - Cutting edge of prog. Finally saw them in concert last year. Great stuff.
-King Crimson - One, one too many, schizophrenic tendencies.... If you "get it", you get it...
-Audioslave - Great modern rock. Chris Cornell has found his band. Though, I'm a little unsure about the new album... "Be Yourself" falls flat with me
-Aerosmith - mebbe because I had Tyler's eye doctor while I was in college? Who knows - I enjoy good enthusiastic rock...which brings me to my last thought-of-the-night-before-bed (donning flak jacket):
-Creed!

Dave Mathews band he has behind him are simply amazing. We had them, with Macy Grey a few years for 3 days, and I sat behind the drummer for all three shows.,.,.,WOW, everybody in that band are UNderrated musicians

I remember when I was living in Cali back in the early 90's, I had a buddy who played bass for a band. I went to go check them out one night, and they were one of the opening bands for Dream Threater in a little hole in the wall club. It was right before Images and Words was released. Amazing back then. John Petrucci, the guitar player, use to have a contract with Ernie Ball/ Music Man guitars, and had a few signature models released. Needless to say, I bought one, and its one of the best playing guitars I own.

O ya, great band.

Give Bjork's Post a serious listen.. VERY good stuff

Christien 05-25-2005 08:53 AM

I can see Bjork being a tough sell - took me a long time to get used to her music, but I've grown to really enjoy it. It started to grow on my just because it was really different, but there's more to it than just being different.

89911 05-25-2005 11:15 AM

I've got a copy of a Bjork cd that I will send to anyone free of charge. Heck, I may even pay for shipping. I think some people (like myself) liked her in the "Sugarcubes" and keep thinking that she'll sound like that again. WRONG!

88BlueTSiQuest 05-25-2005 03:42 PM

Don't get : Country music...... Gangsta Rap..... Boy Bands, Girl Bands, American Idol bands....

I happen to be responding to this while listening to the new NIN CD/DVD 'With Teeth' at high volume levels at the age of 33 ;) . I still haven't decided as to whether or not it lives up to that last album 'The Fragile', as I personally feel that 'The Fragile' is his best work to date. But just listen to the 1st track on 'Teeth' "All the love", I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard him singing in a falcetto voice, now I find that track is the one I replay constantly.

Other bands I get, and enjoy.

MManson...... What can I say?
KMFDM - MDFMK.
MC 900FT Jesus.

I'm sure there's a huge list in my CD racks that would have people scratching their heads :D

gassy 05-25-2005 03:56 PM

Female artists:
Solex
Laika
Patsy Cline of course...

What about the Dead Milkmen? "You'll Dance to Anything..."

Oasis recently called System of a Down the worst band ever...I like some Oasis songs and some System songs
Huh.

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-25-2005 04:07 PM

Oasis sucks... although Wonderwall nearly brings me to tears when I hear it.. But thats another story...

System of a Down has some cool stuff.. I like the Middle Eastern scale stuff they incorporate into the music. Kind of cool to hear dulcimers in metal as well...

I'm not a big fan of nu-metal on the whole though, mostly cause it's boring...

Dead Milkmen are awesome... "*****in Camaro!"

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-25-2005 04:09 PM

Bands im sure that most people dont get but i love...

Residents
Throbbing Gristle
Meat Beat Manifesto
EARLY Genesis

Jims5543 05-25-2005 04:59 PM

The members of Greenday are Canadian, they had a song out called American Idiot it got way too much air time and annoyed me to the point where I will not buy their albums. Even if there is an underlying message in that song it still pisses me off.

If Americans are idiots then don't tour here or sell your albums here.

I think MManson is interesting his music is VERY different and his lyrics are cutting.

I really do not get Ashley Simpson and wonder why she has not disapeared yet.

Micheal Jackson - I do not own a signle album from him, even when he was on top I hated him and his music.

I constantly ask friends if they own a MJ album a majority say no. I have to wonder where all the albums went that he supposidly sold. No one I know sans a small few own his albums yet he is one of the vest selling artists?

Maybe its the friends I keep.

dd74 05-25-2005 05:13 PM

More bands:

Gang of Four
Meat Puppets

and I just recently rediscovered Killing Joke.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here..

Thriller was good.

Cmon, you had Eddie Van Halen, Paul McCartney, Top notch production by Quincy Jones and the songs are still good. Like Billie Jean isnt a catchy tune?

I like the new album. Ive always been a big fan of NIN, (seen them 5 times, once with Bowie, one of the best live shows youll ever see)

It is nowhere near the Fragile in terms of depth and emotion. However I really like what he's doing now. Although I do find it strange that he hasnt gone in a more instrumental direction. I like how he's using more real instrument sound now

lm6y 05-25-2005 07:10 PM

Gotta say I love the new NIN album. I'm a little closer to Trent's age, and I see it as he is looking back on his life. There was a time when we were on top of the world. Then, life gets in the way, and before we realize it, we are past our prime, and we look back on those days, and miss them. It kinda hits home for me.

Other bands I get:

NIN: Turn your anger into a primal scream before you hurt someone. I get that..........

Marilyn Manson : thought anti-christ was brilliant. He is proof that no matter how sane someone is, preconceived notions will prevent 99% of the population from hearing your message based on what they've "heard". I remember an interview after all of the school shootings, the reporter was trying to hang it on him. The reporter asked what he would have done if his son would have been one of the shooters. His reply was that he would have LISTENED to him before it ever got that point, unlike the parents. The reporter was flabbergasted.

The Police: Do more with less. Get rid of the diarrhea of the fingers so common with musicians of the time. Love the "airy" feeling of the music. Very easy to get lost in.

Rush: Yeah, I'm a bass player.......

The Marz Volta: Quite possibly THE most talented group out right now. UNBELIEVEABLE!

Tool: (See The Marz Volta) Very deep and intelligent lyrics.

The dead milkmen: DUH.......

Me First and The Gimme Gimmies: Takes a lot of work and talent to be that far out there. Plus, you can tell it's all for fun, and isn't that what music is supposed to be about?

Bands I don't get:

Led Zep, The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Janice Joplin: Never did like bands that you HAD to think was great. If it doesn't speak to me, what's the use in trying to MAKE yourself like it?

New U2: First three albums are unreal. Next two are good. After Joshua Tree I just wanted to tell Bono to shut the hell up, you are a damned good singer, and a really crappy politician. It seems now he wants to be the dictator of the world.

All Rap: 'nuff said.

Newer Country: Bubba Shot The Juke Box? seriously.................

Anything top 40: again, 'nuff said.

pwd72s 05-25-2005 08:07 PM

Janis Joplin wasn't a band...she did have vocals though, and how!

Oh Haha 05-25-2005 08:24 PM

Bob Seger, J. Geils, Grateful Dead are a few of the musicians I don't care to hear. I respect Bob because he is from Michigan but just don't get what the hype was about. Now, The Romantics are one seriously underated band. Not the crap they put out in the late 80's. That was too MTV-ish. There previous albums were just straight ahead R+R. I saw them last year and they still kicked a$$!
Oh, I hate most of the garbage that passes for 'popular' music.
Still dig some of the old metal bands like Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, etc.

jim72911t 05-25-2005 11:55 PM

Bands I don't get: Any prog-rock. Rush, Widespread Panic, King Crimson, Yes, etc. I know you've spent years in your basement learning your scales and off-time rhythms, but please, please, just play me a song!

Bands (or musicians) that piss me off when I'm in the bathroom at the Denny's off of Highway 99 in Fresno: Dave Mathews, John Mayer. I don't need to hear your whiney, breathy hippie rock while I'm trying to (ahem) relax.

Did I miss something here? I thought they were all from the East Bay, and grew up playing places like Gilman St. when they were kids? At least that's what my little bro's skater friends told me back when they "sold out" with Dookie. In fact, my co-workers' sister actually dated the drummer in high school (allegedly), and I know she didn't live in Canada. But then again I could be wrong. ;)

Bands I get: Joy Division, Chameleons, New Model Army, Jesus and Mary Chain, Kill Creek, Get Up Kids, Guided By Voices, Archers of Loaf, Neil Diamond. Or, any band that actually knows how to write a good pop song.

Jim

WHAT ????

Greenday are NOT from Canada. You must be confusing them with Sum 41. Billie Joe Armstrong was born in Rodeo Cali, and grew up there, along with Mike Dirnt.Frank Edwin Wright III is from SF.

I stand corrected. But, I still do not like Green Day, especially after that song.

I think the band sucks donkey dick

And I will tell you from persoanl experience they are worthless human beings...

Thats some messed up crap. We have them in our building in Oct in support of their new album.

I will say, the last time we had them (last Tour), They brought up fans to play their instruments for a song. That, was pretty cool of a band to do that, during the show.

I never got reggae until I listened to it stoned. Then it all made sense.

The Beatles
Hermans Hermits
The Dave Clark Five
The Hollies
