Well, W has been saying his mission is to bring democracy to the middle east. So I'm sure he will warmly embrace the peoples' choice. After all, like W, the guy is a fundamentalist.

Does anyone really think the result will be different in Iraq or Afghanistan when they have their first real elections?

We don't have enough troops to fight the same terrorists that will flow into Iran - or are probably based in Iran - to start a campaign in the region. Secondly, Bush's popularity is so far down the tubes, to attempt anything like Iraq will have serious implications on his own party, which is already aligning itself against him. If he invades Iran on top of the U.S.'s ineffectual actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, his credibility and history will be ruined.

Lastly, Iran might very well have nuclear weapons. No one knows for sure...

Interesting situation if the guy really was one of the captors. I don't know the gorey details--which were pretty well supressed by the media at the time--but weren't a significant number of the embassy hostages beaten/tortured?

What happens if some of these former hostages who think he was of the guards go noisily public with explicit prime-time accounts of abuse?

Casting about for a historical example of how the civilized world handles people like that, it's hard not to draw comparisons with ex-concentration camp guards...

This could end up putting the administration in an interesting position.
