I bought a 996 about a month ago, and it's my daily driver now (great great car by the way).
In my carburetted, ducktailed, very noisy SC, I used to (usually) get waves from air cooled cars but rarely from 996's. We all have to ignore boxsters here because they are EVERYWHERE. Now, in the 996, I get ignored by the air cooled cars, and while I have passed only one 996 (surprising how few actually) he did nod on the way by. I also had to work a bit to get the attention of a 993 recently, at which point he thumb upped in a reasonably friendly and enthusiastic manner. It's kinda like the air cooled guys are reverse discriminating. There's a change afoot I think. The younger enthusiasts like me are moving into the really rather excellent and inexpensive 996 models, while the older stuffier crowd are staying in their air cooled cars. No big deal - as I posted here a 100 years ago when this thread started, there's too many Porsches around these parts to be acknowledging everyone you see. |
Encountered three air cooled in a matter of hours in one of the local burgs....no acknowledgments from any of them...sheesh.

PS have an '88 coupe....older (63) but not stuffier...oh heavy sigh
|
Came past a grey 997 S the other day, gave a small 'no big deal' wave and I get this look like 'What the hell is he waving at?' Is it so hard even if you don't get it?

I passed 6 Porsches on the way to and from the office yesterday. I waved to all of them...
997 Cab, driver on phone, no wave. 996 Cab, no wave Boxter, woman driver appeared to be picking her nose 997 Coupe, no wave Cayman, no wave 997 Coupe, no wave At least half of those saw me wave and just went on their merry way. I have to go find a hood with more old school P-cars in it. My precieved hit rate on return waves 997 0% 996 10% Boxters 5% 993 70% Pre 993 almost always |
I'd of waved!!

Maybe a little up and down of the headlights as well...

Waved at a Boxter owner today, had my 914 washed and looking great. He ignored me, obviously oblivious to the lineage.

My experience
997 drivers mostly wave at me 996 drivers never wave If the boxster driver waves first I'll wave back:) I always wave to another aircooled 911 a wave and a smile to a 914 and got a wave from an MGA driver this morning! |
Kinda reminds me of my Corvette days back in the 70's.....
Just when the 'vette was becoming a status item and no other connection to the rest of the car or it's heritage...sounds like we kinda have the same thing in the Pcar world also.... Think it may vary according to US region...hhhmmmmmm Along with income and status....seeing lotsa old farts like me driving the newer ones...wonder how long before they'll dump it because of the shifting? |
I never wave at old farts in silver Carreras.;)
|
Jeff....you are soooo bad...snicker snicker...
So when are ya gonna start???? |
The day I start waving at too many folks while driving is the day a DUI is probably not far behind...
|
Next week, I will have the only (running) P-car in my tiny town. I'm gonna be so pissed if I catch that bastard not waving at my reflection on the main street windows....

Driving in France with my gf on our first holiday together, I flashed lights and waved at a group of 911s parked by the roadside in the middle of nowhere, they replied with waves, light flashing and horn blowing. Enthusiasts obviously, so more light flashing and hornblowing from me. The gf asked what was going on and I explained, so she leaned out of the window and waved with both arms. She thought this was great.
Back home in Italy she tried it a couple of times when out in her Boxster. She stopped as she says she was either, regarded as insane by the other driver or as a hooker touting for trade. |
