mid years most pure
the mid year cars with their sleek look and if you can afford or have the skills to keep them in tip top shape with a finely tuned 2.7 with a carerra exhaust are the best of breed. light, fairly modern, reliable, (after all updates have been done) and although rust prone they can be kept in fine condition.
with that said i think that the mid year cars should get a 2 handed enthusiastic hand jive wave gary

I just discovered this thread. It is pretty hilarious.
I don't think the car matters as much as the driver. For example, some 911 guys might look down on 944-series cars, but the only difference between you and me is that you had the money for a 911, and I could only afford a 944. Blessed with this point of view, I wave to any and all Porsches (and make mental note of who waves back)... ... except Cayennes ![]()

Like I keep saying: My 914 is loud, uncomfortable, obnoxious, gets mediocre fuel mileage, is invisible to all the SUVs on the road, is unreliable and finicky, threatens to rust in half at the first hint of rain, and in general a huge pain in the butt to own. And I wouldn't trade it for any other car, except a 914 in better shape.... They're a disease, I tellya--a disease!! But when you get a chance to really flog one in the twisties, or autoX it, you start to understand why we put up with all of it. --DD

I haven't met a Porsche that I didn't like.
I drive a 914 powered by a 3.0 turbocharged SC engine, I dont care if you dont wave or flash back. If i was to wave or flash at every Porsche I pass driving around I would look like a parade wave princess, it seems every other car on the road is a Boxter, Cayenne or 996 they haven't a clue what Im driving. If you wish to look down your nose at me at what I prefer and enjoy driving thats your problem. My 914's a blast.

It has been interesting following this thread through its entirety... I have both... a 911 and (now 6) 914s. I thoroughly enjoy driving them. I also drive a Saab 900 turbo which I am also as zealous about my brand loyalty. The last few PCA club meetings I went to, I was driving what amounted to the least valuable (monetarily) Porsche in the bunch....the 914. Yet, it was the one that got the most attention and oohs and ahhs because they realized that Porsches are a rare bird in our parts... 914s are even rarer to see on the road. To get to the basis of this thread... I am excited to see ANY porsche on the road and will wave at anyone. I have been known to pull over just to converse with a fellow Porsche owner, especially 914 guys. I have made some great friendships in doing so. I honestly think that those that have not driven a 914 should not judge. I choose to drive any of my currently running 914s over the 911 when it comes to ride compliance and sheer fun. In proper tune... a 914 is not slow by any means and I have beat many a car with much more HP at the autocross (to their astonishment) in a bone STOCK 914 2.0L. Tell me you wouldnt want to drive one of those stripped out racing Lotus' Exige's over an Esprit... That is a similar comparison between a 914 and a 911. 914=light/ purposeful/ spartan... 911/ heavier/ luxurious/ powerful. Take them for what they are... completely different animals. Of course I havent even mentioned the Cayenne, 944, 928 bunch. Same deal... different purposes and niches... Porsche nonetheless. My 2 cents.....

So you won't allow 15HP go carts to run against the mighty auto-x king 914s? Afraid to loose the only venue that a 914 can even compete in?
This little beasty will hand ANY Porsche it's ass on your all mighty auto-x course. That list includes mine as well. Yet my wittle tiny wee wee is still proud to own a Porsche ... of any type. ![]()

TTOD at several autocrosses I have been to have been in a kart. Seriously fun and fast.. again, power to weight and center of gravity etc. No arguing... but can you drive to and from the venue in a Kart? You would be hard pressed to make it through the McDonalds drive through in that thing!! *grin* I DO wish I had one of those too!

Since you were all wondering what MY opinion was on this matter:
1) There are a LOT of Porsches in Vancouver. 2 million Boxsters and about half as many 996, 400,000 air cooled 911 made after 1973, and about as many 944 and 951. Some 928 (I guess) and there must be Cayennes too but I'm getting really good at blocking them out. Waving at every Porsche is just not done. Even a guy driving the same model and colour car as you doesn't always wave. Funny enough there are very few early 911, and even fewer 914. 2) The only 914 I ever drove was in an autocross. It was slow and sloppy. An entirely lackluster and uninspiring experience. I know it must have been set up all goofy, but what killed me was how enthusiatic the owner was about his car. If I ever see a 914 on the road I will wave crazily. From what I gather from this thread I guess I can expect a "my penis is bigger than yours" look back. There seems to be a lot of talk on the 914club board about penis size. Good for them I say. If I had a larger penis I'd drive a *****ty car too. 3) I get a lot of waves from water cooled VW owners when I drive my Mark I Jettta. It has sport springs and a header and is WAY more fun to drive than that 914 I drove in the AX. Come to think of it, the Jetta is kind of a beater which might explain the success I've had "with the ladies" since I bought it. 4) Too bad about those 996 and Boxster engines blowing up all over the place. I was genuinely looking forward to buying a used 996 and "clusporting" it one day. Maybe the aftermarket or whatever will remedy the problems, but there sure seem to be a lot of them. 996 owners don't wave, or if they do I don't notice. Thanks for asking for my opinion - I feel better. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That's NO way to treat a perfectly good 928 engine !
![]() By the way, I followed the developement of that car years back with much envy. Very cool. And as for the 914s only being able to compete in AX, it is HUMOR. Lighten up. You guys are awfully defensive for having such large penises.

Dave,
maybe you need to meet me out at second creek or the track of your choice where my "piece of crap" will run circles around either of your cars.... VERY VERY un cool dude!!!! I'm embarrased to be from the same state as you brant --------------------------- quote: I disagree STRONGLY with several things you said. First, a 914 gets a nod, but a 928 or 944 only gets eye contact? The 914 is the ugliest, most useless piece of crap Porsche (or should I say VW) ever put out. Even the 6-cyl version has no reason for existence. Secondly, the 928 is the most luxurious, most advanced, best performing (yes, it is), fastest, street car Porsche ever produced. _________________ Dave 86 911 Carrera 86.5 928S 5-speed Last edited by Brant; 07-19-2005 at 12:44 PM.. |
