Microsoft names new OS: "Vista"

Not many details yet, but the new Microsoft OS is called Vista. You IT types will probably know more about it by Aug. 3 when Beta 1 hits...

Dictionary.com - Vista:
A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.

An avenue or other passage affording such a view.

An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view: “the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up” (Arthur C. Danto).
A turd by any other name...

Hmmm, I'm betting Bryan is right.

Most the time that name is used it's like "Vista Estates" (a trailer-park in the pit of some valley)

I'm thinking "Piss-ta" to join the hallowed ranks of "dot-NYET" and "Winblows".

I see how Firefox is pretty much putting up a good fight against Outlook.

dd74, is Firefox competing with an email client? I thought it was competing with Internet Explorer.

I have an MSDN subscription, so when the beta is available, I might download it. I might be tempted to install it on my primary XP box at home. Heck, I need to nuke that machine anyway.

I need to build a couple more boxes for home use... I want to take another Shuttle XPC box and rig it up as a DVR/Media center and file/web server. One for a primary Linux desktop, and one with whatever flavor of windoze to play games on and such.

Matt, have any recommendations for a mini-itx (?) board to use in my old shuttle case? I want to run KnoppMyth on it, so I'll need a tv card... do they make itx boards with svideo out onboard?

Mcrosoft lets everyone "try the beta" it's called V. 1.0 - 1.0.3.

Although, in the case of the original Windows, it was 1.0 - 3.0

Appropriately named per Bryan's post. We are all looking for an OS with efficient & robust code instead of the usual MSCr@p!

I read that "Vista", as MSFT uses it, is an acronym. It stands for "viruses, infections, spyware, trojans and adware".

We train folks from the Microsoft testing labs. They were telling us the that the blue screen of death is now the red screen of death. Great idea, since red is such a calming color.

The complaint that MS was getting from users was that they were sick and tired of the Blue Screen. So MS, in all their infinite wisdom, added a Red Screen of Death for a different class of problems. Now, we'll see fewer BSODs because some of the events that used to generate BSODs will now generate RSODs instead. Great idea, thanks, Microsoft, for all of that innovation.

Of course, some of us have given up on both Blue and Red -- go BSD, baby!
