U.S. military admits error in news releases
Statements had similar quotes from 'unidentified Iraqi' BAGHDAD (CNN) -- The U.S. military expressed regret Monday for issuing news releases about two separate attacks in Iraq that included almost identical quotes attributed to an unidentified Iraqi. ... From Sunday: " 'The terrorists are attacking the infrastructure, the ISF and all of Iraq. They are enemies of humanity without religion or any sort of ethics. They have attacked my community today and I will now take the fight to the terrorists,' said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified." From July 13: " 'The terrorists are attacking the infrastructure, the children and all of Iraq,' said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified. 'They are enemies of humanity without religion or any sort of ethics. They have attacked my community today and I will now take the fight to the terrorists.' " http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/07/25/military.release/index.html Too funny. This this "unidentified Iraqi" even exists? |

bah, notes get jumbled, and it'd be easy to lose one in the shuffle, accidently say it twice, it's just sloppyness. That's all, just a case of sloppyness.

Surely cool chick, you're not implying the quote may have been fiddled or fabricated?

Seems to me the main difference between the military and other arms of government is that the military admits its mistakes.

"Seems to me the main difference between the military and other arms of government is that the military admits its mistakes"
In our country they're all pretty reluctant to admit mistakes - military or otherwise. They're usually pretty happy to admit something when there's no other choice but only once they've been pinned down or backed into a corner. edit - and fiddling or fabricating a quote is not what I'd call a mistake. Closer to deliberate misrepresentation or (dare I say it) a lie. Getting caught out might be considered a mistake though.

Umm, maybe something got lost in the cultural translation thing. My post was simply suggesting that most govt depts are reluctant to fess up when they mess up. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy - just a fudge & a screw up. Bad luck to get caught out.

But...as you and stu and a few others have taught is in another thread, you can't trust anything the military is telling us. so, chances are, if they say they were wrong, most likely they were correct....or....something like that. You guys are so confusing!!!!!!!

I did a Google Image search to see what the "unidentified Iraqi" looks like.
http://images.google.com/images?q=unidentified+Iraqi&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images Take your pick. My take is that an "unidentified Iraqi" is anyone rolled up in a Persian carpet and thrown in the back of a pick up truck. If this image offends you (trust me it's one of the mild ones I've found), just PM Z-man I'm sure he will remove it for you sissies. ![]()

Sounds like something that would happen at would happen at any corporation.
Why is it that liberals continue to point out mistakes/screw ups from the military? What purpose does it serve? |

"you can't trust anything the military is telling us"
I don't agree with this statement. My point of view is that you can't automatically trust everything you are told (because as this and other instances have shown, sometimes it's just bs). Now if you wish to ridicule by exagerating then that's fine but you've moved the goalposts quite a bit in doing so. "Sounds like something that would happen at would happen at any corporation. " Agree - corporations are also in the habit of fudging when it suits their purposes. "Why is it that liberals continue to point out mistakes/screw ups from the military? What purpose does it serve?" Just so some of you understand why it's probably a good thing to have a little skepticism. And a mistake is quite different to a deliberate attempt to mislead. I'd think a mistake is something that was not planned - just happened. This may be an example of a mistake but I'd think the editing of the quote would indicate not. Only a small point and no big deal in the scheme of the war but you guys should be big enough to recognise it for what it is.

I call horse**** on you and you friends. You guys point out mistakes from the military because it's controlled by the President and you consider it an extension of the President. You are not attempting to educate about skepticism, you are attempting to control through propaganda. Besides, Conservatives are inherently smarter than liberals, so we naturally see through BS better than your side. |

Mark - if that's not tongue in cheek then it's pretty funny.
As far as I know the military is ultimately controlled by the president (supreme commander or something isn't it - can't remember the term). Govt sets policy & directs military - nothing wrong with that, it's the same all around the globe. So it's just as much an extension of your president at least as much as any other govt dept. I don't consider this thread to have much to do with your president at all - it's a simple fudge by someone in the armed forces, probably a pr hack. It'd be ridiculous to think your pres had any direct hand in it at all. What exactly do you think I/others are trying to control? My main point throughout all of my posts has centred around skepticism and believe it or otherwise I feel it's best applied to all sources of 'information' regardless of left wing/right wing bias. If your other political party was making the same screw ups I'd be saying the same things. Should you find applying a skeptical or critical eye to your current administration or military actions confronting and wish to avoid this I completely understand. Much easier to just claim propoganda is being foisted on you (you may be right in this statement but I feel you're pointing in the wrong direction). "Besides, Conservatives are inherently smarter than liberals, so we naturally see through BS better than your side" If you make this comment in a serious manner it indicates how stupid you really are. I wouldn't be as naive to imply that this stupidity extends to everyone who has your political views. If that was the case your party would not be in government. It seems to me that your BS detector may only be pointed to the left - try applying it to everything ![]()
