Saw a new VW hardtop/convertible model today

Wife and I went to lunch at Fuddruckers and there was a new model VeeDub parked there that I had never seen. Steel retractible top, 2 liter turbo engine, to be introduced "officially" in the US sometime early fall. Really nice looking. The owner let us sit in it and he put the top up and down. Said the price will start at 28k.

Could be a winner at that price point.

It looked nice but watching all those actuators and motors in the top mechanism made me quite nervous!!!

Pretty cool, sounds like a lot of money though.

Looks pretty good. Where does this fit, size-wise, in the VW lineup? Smaller-than-Jetta-bigger-than-Golf?

Golf and Jetta are the same size basically (only difference is height of cargo area)

The Eos falls between the Jetta/Golf and the Passat.

This would fly off the showroom floor if they built it.

Just saw one yesterday.

It's not just a retractable hardtop, but actually has an opening sunroof when the top is up. Pretty cool.

Saw one this weekend at the dealer - Very nice car and if I had money to burn and didn't plan on keeping it past the warranty period I would get one.

The roof looks like an expensive nightmare waiting to happen. At nearly 40K for the car I can think of a few others I would rather have

Saw one of those retractable hardtop VWs in Salzburg, Austria last month parked outside the patio resturant I was at. Nice looking and all but it was amazing how much attention it got. Many people walking by it taking pictures.

For that money you can practically get the Mercedes 280SLK, which also has the retractable hardtop.

Cool idea, great design, wrong niche with that pricing.

base is 28k with the smaller engine. bro in law works for VW america, he says the top is incredibly complex, buttloads of moving parts. the car is quite impressive in person and will be positioned just under the Audi offering

Exactly what I was thinking... I would have to check autotrader to be sure but I would much rather have a slightly used SLK for the same money.

this is ironic, considering the old vw ads that pushed the reliability of the BEETLE convert top mechanism, "raised and lowered by an infallible mechanism....you.(pARAPHRASED)"

Never had any trouble with the top of my VW convertible, really never had trouble with anything in 2 dozen years, but it was slow, air cooled and had a manual top. Really liked the tops on the bugs, nice thick pad, rull headliner, glass rear window with defroster.

No thanks on the new one though, if I want an Audi I will buy a TT
