I don't understand the need for retractable hardtops.
-Modern convertibles rarely leak -Convertible is lighter, cheaper,and doesn't take up your trunk space when down. So why does anyone need a retractable hardtop? Is it safer? I can't imagine it is that much safer than a convertible with some roll-hoops. Used toown a Z3 once upon a time, and never had a problem with heating either. Quite the contrary. All that engine heat blowing into a small passenger compartment warmed you up quite quickly.

It's a lot harder for a thief (or just an a-hole kid being a punk) to slash a hard top than a soft top.

Can't imagine that it adds any kind of stiffness to the chassis. Might actaully SUBTRACT stiffness, because you have a non-cohesive weight at the top of the car which is inclined to sway.
