it's all about making the life of person next you a little better. dedicating your life so that others around you have a better one is where it's at. actively thinking of things YOU CAN DO to make a difference, and then DOING THEM. You must be consistent, purposeful and unselfish in your acts.

This is what makes a man.

Maybe it needs to be re-phrased to "pick your fights wisely, then only engage in them if you are protecting loved ones safety and wellbeing - then fight to win..."

I guess it goes back to #1

It is interesting tha no one has mentioned temperance or charity.

TABS comes close with his "resisting temptation" - interesting coming from a guy with a first class ticket to the endulgance lounge!

ShaunG9Girl also has a close fly-by with direct realtionship to his company mission! Another reason why that business is a success - it's all about living the cause I guess.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

or:

"Anyone can be polite untill a cow craps all over the front yard."

I could do a Flintstone and paste the whole thing, but some interesting reading is here:

http://www.xyonline.net/Measure_of_a_man.shtml

Got to love google.

In general I think a good man is someone who dependably does the unglamorous "right thing" again and again - not the brief, exciting, glamorous or passionate Hemingway type actions (bull fighting, hunting lions, getting in a fight).

I think 3, 4, and 5, could be summarized as "Integrity." Be who you say you are, whether anyone's watching or not.

The Navy does a lot of brainwashi -- uh, training on this sort of thing. We're down to three "core values" right now. While they aren't perfect, it's a good starting point.

Honor: Conduct ourselves in the highest ethical manner in all relationships with peers, superiors and subordinates; Be honest and truthful in our dealings with each other, and with those outside the Navy; Be willing to make honest recommendations and accept those of junior personnel; Encourage new ideas and deliver the bad news, even when it is unpopular; Abide by an uncompromising code of integrity, taking responsibility for our actions and keeping our word; Fulfill or exceed our legal and ethical responsibilities in our public and personal lives twenty-four hours a day. Illegal or improper behavior or even the appearance of such behavior will not be tolerated. We are accountable for our professional and personal behavior. We will be mindful of the privilege to serve our fellow Americans.

Courage: courage to meet the demands of our profession and the mission when it is hazardous, demanding, or otherwise difficult; Make decisions in the best interest of the navy and the nation, without regard to personal consequences; Meet these challenges while adhering to a higher standard of personal conduct and decency; Be loyal to our nation, ensuring the resources entrusted to us are used in an honest, careful, and efficient way. Courage is the value that gives us the moral and mental strength to do what is right, even in the face of personal or professional adversity.

Commitment: Demand respect up and down the chain of command; Care for the safety, professional, personal and spiritual well-being of our people; Show respect toward all people without regard to race, religion, or gender; Treat each individual with human dignity; Be committed to positive change and constant improvement; Exhibit the highest degree of moral character, technical excellence, quality and competence in what we have been trained to do. The day-to-day duty of every Navy man and woman is to work together as a team to improve the quality of our work, our people and ourselves.

...And I look back over this and say, "This is Man's measure of himself. What is God's measure?" ... The answer only takes a second, and it's not going to be popular here. Love. Jesus said that the greatest commandment was love -- first, love God, and second, in the same breath, love your neighbor as yourself. Paul tells us in his letter to Corinth that without love, we are nothing. And when he wrote to Ephesus on marriage, his command was "Husbands, love your wives."

Ah, but the great one-hit theologian of the 80's, Haddaway, asked the critical question: "What is love? Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more .... what is love?"

Hey

What makes a man?
Is it the power in his hands?
Is it his quest for glory?
Give it all you've got,
to fight to the top
So we can know your story

Now you're a man

A man, man man
Now you're a man

A manny manny man
A man man man

You are now a man
You're a man
Now you're a man

Live it, Live it

What makes a man?
Is it the woman in his arms?
Just cause she has big titties?
Or is it the way
he fights every day?
....No, it's probably the titties

Now you're a man

A man, man man
Now you're a man-man

Man-man man-man man
Now you're a man

M-A-N, man
Man, man-man man
Now you're a man

Back in my college days I lived in a co-op. The co-op was next to a large Frat house. The boys had a contest every year that was in their minds the true measue of a man. Who ever left the largest dropings was crowned king big flush. I would of hated to of been one of the judges.

How about:

A real man enjoys having a pretty lady doctor put her finger up his butt?*

Have heard that if a woman stimulates a mans prostrate while concentrating bit on his "johnson" that things can get very explosive, and in a hurry.

Course I have no personal knowledge of this, just read it in a book, on the internet or a little bird told me.

Be careful if you have not been there...

How about the Aborigines?
He may not have everything on your list but imagine going out into the jungle with nothing but a loin cloth and a pointy stick to kill wild animals to feed his family.

Now that's a man!

Actually, I think they would fir very nicely - there is no material references only actions with the exception of taking a bath regularly (they may, I just don't remember seeing on the Discovery channel).

I still think #4 and #9 are less "religious" and more spiritial.

Pehaps being man enough to attack one's arguments instead of the person would be a good place to start.
