The Times Picayune has a ton of stuff that's below the national radar:

Ahh.. the inevitable "my news is better than your news" arguement.

Take it from someone who was watching ALL the news because we were in harm's way: Fox has been quicker to report, far more accurate in reporting, much slower in making the disaster about their politics, and honest.

I watched early damage feeds on CNN that included at least 2 that were from Pensacola, FL after hurricane Ivan. I say at least 2 because these are the ones I recognized for fact to be from Pensacola; there may have been more. CNN fell behind MSNBC in credibility.

Amen, jon, but the man has a job to protect and a family to feed. One bad word about the administration and he'll be maning a weather station in Antarctica and, if history repeats itself (as it has many times with this administration), he knows he'll be replaced by an even bigger screw-up than he is.

That "claw hammer" is a nice touch. Strike fear in their hearts.

How about:

"I'm sitting inside with a harley, a samaurai sword, a gimp, some medieval pliers, and two pipe-hittin' crackheads. Looters welcome!"

get this!!! a deputy sheriff just called me to borrow my AR15 and asked if I had a shotgun also for when he goes on duty tonight... that doesn't sound good! just behind our shop police were shooting at some guy a couple hours ago. they missed as usual but he's off to jail. I was at the station when the first cops arrived. I think he may have been robbing it. The deputy told me about all the stolen cars being found in town also. this might sound like every day stuff you guys, but it's very rare here.

Hope you have something else for protection. Stay safe John, would hate to have something happen now, after the natural disaster.

Good Luck.

What happened to the weapons that the Sheriff SHOULD have in his armory? Come on, almost every guy in Louisana hunts and to hear of a law enforcement type who is asking to borrow a rifle or shotgun?

At the minimum he could should be able to the local Guard Armory and requisition a M-16...

what local Guard Armory? closest one I know is 60 miles away. maybe the fact that I bought the gun from him last year has some bearing on it. it isn't some random cop calling. also I was wrong, he is with the city police and a friend. obviously you have no idea how small this town is. pop. 12,703 and that includes the neighboring towns.

Ah, makes a difference hearing that you know each other and that its his old gun. I know lots of LE and they all usually have a small stash of weapons at home and work. Your town is not listed so had no idea if its large or small, sorry.

Loan him the -15 and lots of full mags! Keep the shotgun for home defense unless you have more than one.

Good luck and keep your powder dry!

Agreed...be careful John. The N.G. has finally arrived in New Orleans, but it seems that it's up to the locals to deal with the badasses who are in your neck of the swamp. Also, many thanks for keeping us up to speed on happenings there, as you see them.

My friend giving away ice and food counted at least 7 cars obviously hotwired today. My cop friend said there are 18 wheelers and many more stolen cars also recovered. 2 buses of refugees were dumped here in town. The sheriff said he was trying to round them up but can't find them. people are getting their doors knocked on, asked for directions and then getting robbed. women are getting harrassed in the Walmart parking lot. carjackings. lots of rumors, maybe truths. never saw any of these things around here before. everyone I know is carrying guns in their cars. did see the police shoot 8 shots at a carjacker today though. and people wonder why there's predjudice here in the south. go figure! none of this ever happened here before. we're having an inner city situation out here in the sticks. no motel rooms, not much gas and stores are being emptied and we can't get trucks in. we've been waiting all week for supplies out of Texas. now they tell us it will be next week. we may have to shut the doors of our store soon. every restaurant and supermarket we've talked to is running low. things are gonna get uglier soon. it sounds a lot worse than it is, but it's not something we're used to. hopefully things clear up before next month. the festival was canceled from labor day weekend until Oct.. first time in 70 years I think

John - I have a friend in Batton Rouge that has said the same things as you. Things are getting dicey there too. He is well armed and just waiting for someone to step foot on his land.

In all honesty - I am a Land Surveyor and have had to work in all kinds of neighborhoods. The neighborhood I feel the most threatened in is the rural farm area. I cannot tell you how many times I have had a gun barrel leveled at me with the question. What are you doing on my land? We try to tell everyone we are there but sometimes it is difficult to get to everyone or it will just take too damn long.

When I am in the hood I make sure to lock up the truck completely when not in sight of it. But, I have never had a gun pointed at me nor has anyone given me any grief over being in their yard. The only problem I have in the hood is Pit Bulls in the yards.

I'm surprised that only a limited number of National Guardsmen have been dispatched to NO...but regardless, these looters need to be taken under control, with or without deadly force. Once the looters hear that they can be and will be shot for looting, maybe they'll stop...hopefully.

Glad to hear you're ok John! I've got a friend in Mississippi and he's been telling me some horror stories!

there was an attempted bank robbery across the street from our shop a few minutes ago.. the geniuses tried to rob it thru the driveup. hahaha that's at least 30 ft from the bank. "put all the money in the carrier and send it to me thru the tube or we'll shoot at you sitting behind that bulletproof window" hahahaha too lazy and stupid to even get out of their cars to steal. my girlfriend was in the bank at the time.

John, that's funny! I guess there can be humor in almost anything. Do be careful there, it's going to be some time before the smaller communities get back to normal. Nope, I've never been through a hurricane, but we had an unusual typhoon hit Oregon one Columbus day back in the early 60's. I'll never forget it. The official help comes first to the large cities. The small towns are pretty much on their own until the larger population areas are taken care of. I guess in all the attention we've been giving the badasses, perhaps we should remind ourselves that they are relatively few in numbers. But...a few can sure make life miserable for those who already have too much to deal with..

The result of this 'Would you shoot the looters dead' - poll does not seem to go the looters way..

What is really scary about the looters and the general anarchy is that basically the 'looters' are not different from me or anyone else. They are human beings that subjected to certain environment and perhaps in some cases genes, will perform the most hideous acts. The world has witnessed this happened many times before in a civilized /restricted society. Former Yugoslavia comes to mind. Friendly neighbors for decades starts raping, murdering, generally behaving like animals (oh and looting), when the general conditions change.

Perhaps not a parallel comparison, but my point is that the egocentric, reptile animal are within us all giving the right/wrong circumstances.

The looters say: We have been poor, bashed around and lost hope for years. Its not more than right we get a bit of a refund from those who have.
Some of you say: They steel our property. Not more than right they are shot dead.

Donīt get me wrong - I do not condone looting. I am just horrified what Homo sapiens is capable of.
