speeder,
no, it hasn't flooded where I am. We actually only had minor damage this time. Andrew was a different story though. Our problems here are nothing compared to N.O. sorry if I gave the impression they were. our problems now are more of a supply thing from the influx of people from N.O. and surrounding areas and the fact that everything comes from N.O. The right storm hitting the right place, and we would have the same problems though. we don't have the pumps to clear out the water, only little slips of land surrounded by swamps, protected by levees all around. in the image, the light green we're sitting on is 8ft above sealevel. the darker green is swamp

Interviewed on several network morning news shows, Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, blamed emergency assistance delivery problems on "the total lack of communications, the inability to hear and have good intelligence on the ground about what was actually occurring there."
Brown appeared the morning after the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, charged that administration officials "don't have a clue" about what's going on in the devastated city that long has been among the nation's premier tourist attractions. "People are getting the help they need," Brown asserted on NBC's "Today" show. "This is an ongoing disaster. This disaster didn't just end when Katrina left." But Brown also acknowledged that little in the government's preparedness plan took into account the likelihood of lawlessness in such dire straits. "Before the hurricane struck I came down here personally and rode the storm out in Baton Rouge," he said. "We had all of our rescue teams, the medical teams, pre-deployed, ready to go. ... The lawlessness, the crime that is occurring, did surprise us." Appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America," the FEMA director said he "never thought I'd see" the lawlessness that has overtaken the city and interrupted emergency relief efforts. "It's heartbreaking and very, very frustrating to me from a broad operational perspective," he said. "What we have right now is a situation where, with my having access to the military, bringing in the National Guard troops, securing the area, we'll be able to continue the relief efforts that we have been doing over the last several days," Brown added. "We'll be able to ramp those up and continue the evacuation." |

After 9/11 people were in too much shock to misbehave. Crime actually went down. Totally different situations. The World Trade Center was geographically a small area..

Mule, that'a an amazing story.
And it syncs with what some other folks ahve been saying about NO: that people were shooting to *bring* rescuers to them. Now, I don't know what it's like to have no food/water/sanitation for 3 days, but I can't imagine it would make me think of a gun as a signal flare.

I did not read the entire tread, and when I say this I just
want everybody to know that I have a lot of really really good BLACK freinds and im a white boy so theres nothing racist in what im saying just my observation. Every time I tune in to CNN and they show all the looters young or old, and the huge # of people in groupes that decided to either stay during Katrina or where unable to leave all seem to be Black with the odd White dude. It almost looks like Africa or something. Where are all the White dudes. Or are the southern states just like this where white people are the minority. Do you guys think there some people who decided to stay back, with the intent of looting and getting a great deal on that big screen TV. What do you guys think can any of you relate to what im seeing? |

I think if you are higher on the economic ladder, you have the sense the 'things will be taken care of.'
I think a lot of what we're seeing on TV (which is the 5% that the producers think will be the most sensational and dramatic) is a result of people not seeing authority in place, and not having any faith that help is coming.

tech- the people I've talked to in the area, not the news, say it's exponentially WORSE than the news shows.

It seems to me that the net is doing a better job of news gathering than the network pros. I'll admit to clicking here first, leaving the TV mostly off. Is it true that SWAT teams are finally moving into NO? If so, maybe the junkie/looters are being handled. Better late than never, I guess.
