I agree with rika, I have been in all three major earth quakes in calif. I have been in one tornado, and one tropical storm. I'll take an earth quake any day. at least I can move some debris and find enough to get by.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Chaos and lawlessness hampered the evacuation of New Orleans on Thursday and a U.S. senator said thousands may have died in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast.
It's about keeping order, avoiding chaos. Rescue personnel cannot do their jobs under the current conditions.

Stupid question: Where is your Army ? We had the same problems with the Indians blocking a few bridges and roads over here, the Army came in and cleaned the mess.

My best friend just called me from NO... He escaped to Mandeville... He says conditions are much, much worse than the news is portraying. People's homes are being decimated by armed looters and innocent people are being shot for their loot. Doctors (friends brother is a MD and working at one of the hospitals) are being mugged at gun point outside the hospitals for narcotics. They are closing hospitals because they are not safe b/c of the armed gangs. Patients being airlifted from the hospitals are being shot at. A very scary situation.
Shooting "looters" is NOT to protect Circuit City's plasma tv inventory. Many of you people need to OPEN YOUR EYES!!! - Skip

That sounds horrible... glad your friend made it out safe. What you are describing is much more than looting... they are blocking the rescue operations. As far as I'm concerned, they should be shot. Right in the nutsack.

Agree that exact landfall etc etc are not very predictable... however in hurriance season hurricanes are.. even if a Cat 5 is rare....but the average severity seems to be increasing...
So prevention always being better than cure the logical heads up and pre event mobilisation of the NG (not Federal Forces) would have been a rational decision. However the political capital cost of this is enourmous and NO elected offical can affor dthat mistake....his job is pretty much done th instant there is a no show hence people will bi#ch like mad... However the response, such as the imposition of martia llaw in response to a very serious breakdown in civil affairs is a logical one... and the person who makes it can blame the looters or whom so ever...afterall a 'reasonable' man would not have believed fellow citizens of XZY could do this to their fellows.. and so forth... Yup I'm very cynical.. possibly too cynical for my own good, but as the evacuation decision is finally a politically driven one, politics.. as in the exercise of political power does come into it... and neither left or right owuld have done it differently.. its the being in power that does it.. |

Maybe we could enlist the aid of those who volunteered to go to the US / Mexican border and shoot illegal aliens, see if they could go to New Orleans and shoot the looters.

they're starting to rob outside New Orleans now.. Houses burglerized and several supermarkets here in my town and surrounding areas have been robbed at gunpoint and we're 80 miles from New Orleans. people are standing in line at Walmart buying ammunition. We're running out of food and most gas stations are out of fuel. We're on the main exit west from N.O. after I-10. Thousands of cars passing thru every day. it's not going to be pretty with all the armed cajuns protecting what's theirs.
