well I will put it this way. if my brother is walking down your street and you think hay, that guy is looting and you "tag" him. I will "tag" you, your family, your kids, your pets, and everyone who looks like they may be partialy related to you.

Obviously no-one is going to authorize open season on looters. But I would bet that if Slak came home one night to see his own home and personal treasures being ripped off by a group of rioting thugs, he might have second thoughts about how to deal with gangsta style looting.

After the flooding took place, looting flood damaged electronics is probably does not matter much in the whole scheme of things, but that first day after, not knowing the levees were going to let go..... Well I would have been all for law enforcement just popping those thugs.

So we have anarchy in NO. Martial law has been declared, brother shoots sister, the rescued shoot the rescuers, and the cops are looting. In kind of a bizarre abstract way, I am reminded of Lord of the Flies. Civilization is really just a thin facade, a veil that we hide behind to feel warm and fuzzy about ourselves. The bizarre fantasy about British choir boys murdering each other on a desert island seems all too real in light of emerging news.

9-11 also had looting, but it wasn't reported much. A number of firefighters and policemen were caught looting jewelry stores, etc. in the mall under the World Trade Center.

One of the first things that happened after the fall of Saddam was that many young women were found shot, execution-style in the streets. Most were shot by their families for having 'disgraced them' -- presumably at some prior time. The removal of authority triggers people to act on pent up motives.

...it's one of mankind's less attractive qualities. And yes, I put volunteer 'looter shooters' in that category, too.

What we see diffrently is this.

ME: should I shoot this guy for takeing some TV from some guy who lives in another part of town. no. should I do whatever need be done to protect me and mine. YES.

That is the only diff I see.

Back to my Grandpa O'Rourke's point when talking to me...back in 1906, those orders to shoot looters weren't given to protect"stuff". They were given to prevent the anarchy that is happening now in New Orleans as we discuss the issue. IMO, the leadership we had in 1906 was smarter than the leadership we have today. Maybe not smarter, just not hampered by "political correctness"?

I wouldn't shoot some one for taking water or food and clothes in a situation that they are in. they need that. I might shoot into the air to stop looters from ram-sacking a Circuit City. But i would never kill someone over a radio or TV or any material good, unless they planned to use deadly force against me . The situation fell apart when aid was not sent in fast enough after the storm passed. with no electric power, no gas, no car,no cell phone or phone service and what looks like nobody knowing when you could expect help to reach you. I would break into the white house if it meant saving a loved one or a friend. these people have nothing...and any store that has 3 feet of water in it will throw everything that was in there away. I have seen several video reports where the people are hugging a tree in chest deep water and the camera boat didn't stop. . where are these peoples priorities? is the picture worth that persons life???

plain and simple..we got caught in our underwear for all to see,and now some folks are gittin naked..not purty

The threat of deadly force carries a lot more weight than actually using it. If word was broadcast that police had orders to shoot to kill, I suspect that the looting would end within hours. Even in an area without electricity, radio or phones, word spreads very quickly. A couple of helicopters with loud speakers wouldn't hurt either.
