not at all worried about the armed cajuns, hell, I'm one of them. Almost everyone here knows how to shoot, almost everyone is a hunter. Production slows at the begining of hunting seasons. They don't call it the sportsman's paradise for nothing. no need for a license to shoot someone trying to rob you. yet!

I rather read that than read... some looter robbed me, shot my wife and raped my daughter back in 05, right after Katrina... cops were too busy protecting the civil rights of some poor minority caught stealing at Circut City because he needed to feed his family!

Well, upon further investigation, according to the photographers, the captions are accurate.

From:
http://www.snopes.com/photos/katrina/looters.asp

Quote:
A Salon article on the photographs by Aaron Kinney suggests the captions were a result of a combination of contexual and stylistic differences:
Jack Stokes, AP's director of media relations, confirmed today that [photographer Dave] Martin says he witnessed the people in his images looting a grocery store. "He saw the person go into the shop and take the goods," Stokes said, "and that's why he wrote 'looting' in the caption."

Regarding the AFP/Getty "finding" photo by [photographer Chris] Graythen, Getty spokeswoman Bridget Russel said, "This is obviously a big tragedy down there, so we're being careful with how we credit these photos." Russel said that Graythen had discussed the image in question with his editor and that if Graythen didn't witness the two people in the image in the act of looting, then he couldn't say they were looting.

The photographer who took the Getty/AFP picture, Chris Graythen, also posted the reasons behind his caption:

I wrote the caption about the two people who 'found' the items. I believed in my opinion, that they did simply find them, and not 'looted' them in the definition of the word. The people were swimming in chest deep water, and there were other people in the water, both white and black. I looked for the best picture. there were a million items floating in the water — we were right near a grocery store that had 5+ feet of water in it. it had no doors. the water was moving, and the stuff was floating away. These people were not ducking into a store and busting down windows to get electronics. They picked up bread and cokes that were floating in the water. They would have floated away anyhow.

no need... got my AR15 with several clips. I'm having to sit here at the wine shop just in case. it's getting crazy... My girlfriend won't unlock the door unless I'm here. several people robbed at the local supermarket, fights and guns at Walmart today, several stores robbed at gunpoint. A friend that owns a supermarket baked 7 cases of bread today and sold out in a few hours. Shelves are emptying. Stations out of gas. it's gonna get interesting soon.

today I heard from a friend. he was in New Orleans and rescued 150 people in his boat but had to stop because he was being fired on. That makes at least 6 people I know of that have put their lives on hold to help in the rescue efforts and had to stop because of people shooting at them. Animals!!!!!!

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Godspeed John...we all wish you the best. You're okay on water? Other basics?

Your comment has to be one of the most ignorant, misinformed, stupid things I have ever read on this board and that's saying a lot
I won't even begin to dissect the idiocy of your comment

pwd72s, we have everything we need for now. We're running out of food for our cafe. We may have to close until when and if we can get a shipment from Houston next week. they have canceled twice so far.
most of our food and wine came from warehouses in N.O.. That's going to hurt. I get my pools out of Florida, so I won't be working for quite a while. that's going to hurt also. I'll probably have to refund the deposit on the job I was supposed to start this week after I've already sent it off to pay for the shell. Guess I'll have to break out the carpenter tools and look for work. everything thing else is hunky-dory.

My choice would be to have the tools needed to protect myself and loved ones. IMHO, this disaster has proven the inability of government to protect or "save" us. I've sort of watched network TV throughout this. Finally, tonight, they used the word "anarchy". That mean no control, nobody keeping order. Flyenby? Outlaw guns, some will still have them. Me? I'm happy to learn that John has an AR 15...
John? Prayers here are with you! Silly as it sounds, I'm happy to hear that you worry about monetary problems. Those can be solved, one way or another...

Thanks Steve. I feel like I've accomplished something.

I just hate the idea of someone getting his head blown off for lifting a loaf of bread. Keeping order is great but people have to eat too.

This is pretty interesting (in a horrible, train wreck sort of way).

This thread, and the situation in NO, FWIW.

You have anarchy in NO - looting, menacing, shooting, etc.

The US is not the only "western" country (I'm thinking OECD) to have suffered this sort of natural distaster, but somehow - and I'm trying not to be accusatory or perjorative here - America has managed to end up in anarchy.

Maybe the anarchy is the same, but the news coverage is better (now, than it was, and in the US, compared to elsewhere). Maybe the damage is different in a way which causes the anarchy. I dunno.

I seriously think it is a people thing. I dunno why, either, but I do. It feels like the gun thing (the fascination with owning guns and the mentality to use it to get what you want/fear).

(edit) Let's not start a gun debate here, it's not worth it.

John, hang in there man. Our prayers are with you.

The scary thing is, we're seeing a model of what may happen to the civilized world in the event of a nationwide catastrophic event.

John, if it's any consolation, one afternoon radio show in L.A. raised over a quarter million for the Red Cross today, and two official Red Cross events raised over $800K just in Los Angeles. Help will be on the way.
