And also Joe, this wasn't just a "big storm" this is the worst disaster in American history that has displaced more people than since the Civil War. 1.5 million people.

Quit downplaying it and making it like some routine crap so you can lynch the mayor.

And another thing Joe, you have 36 hours and 300 schoolbuses to go to mannaland hours away in the middle of a cornfield with the manna flowing and as much water as lake michigan, a regular girlscout camp right?

But these buses.....who's going to drive them? You're a bus driver for the school right? There has been a mandatory evacuation and you have 36 hours to get out. So what do you do? Go drive them or get your own damn family out of harms way?

Do you think all or even most of these 300 bus drivers would waste their 36 hours driving these damn buses cross country?

Yeah! School bus drivers; years of dedicated training . . .they could never be replaced so easily.

C'mon, some 18 y/o hopped in one and drove it off (full). . . he even figured out how to operate that tricky folding door.

Where are you getting this 36 hours business? The Mayor made the "Mandatory" evacuation order on Sunday. The time stamp on the AP story announcing it was 3:46 PM, Sunday the 28th. The hurricane hit Monday morning, ~ 8AM IIRC. Even if the AP story was delayed hitting the wires, it was less than 24 hours. The state of emergency was in place since the 26th, but the mandatory order came too late to have any chance of success.

As to the Army Corps of Engineers budget and spending, read the Washington Post article I linked. It is discussed in detail. Make sure you read it all, it is two pages. Here is the link again:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/07/AR2005090702462.html

If you care, you can read the "City of New Orleans Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, Annex I: Hurricanes" here:

http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=46&tabid=26

Make your own decisions on if it was followed.

True, you got 36 hours. chop chop. Go find all these 18 year olds, and you're right, it's so easy to drive them, I'll bet your 10 year old can do it, sure, along with everything else. C'mon, you have to execute this whole grand evacuation. Don't take one little part....you gotta set up mannaland hours away.

Islands, I thought you were a tad more realistic....

True, but let's be generous. Give them the extra 12 hours for they're superman.

realisticly

My bad - when your talking about finding competent people to drive a school bus (to save their skin) . .well, 36 hours or 48 . .it's all moot. Only trained professionals can operate those bad boys. (in a life or death situation - best to just face a catagory 5 hurricane . .. in a city below sea level.)

realistic wouldnt want to inconvienenceany of the already assigned school bus driveres either.

so weak, cc

Who's gonna drive the busses?? Those that were assigned to drive the busses in the emergency plan ( I believe there are 680 school and municipal busses involved). Do some research, the plan was there, just not acted upon.

Gotta weigh in on this thread. Mandatory evacuation was given the day beofre the storm after voluntary evacuation was give 2 days prior. The traffic flow out of No was unbelievable. They started contraflow out of the city in all directions 2 days beofre the storm. The mayor and the Governor have been and are still at odds and it will be interesting to see how this will play out. Ray Nagan should be commended on the job that he has "tried" to do. The initial plan had all efofrts coordinated through local and parish officials. Then others came in and took over and thats when sparks began to fly. FEMA is all over down here and the ones that are located in Baton Rouge seem to be "along for the ride". Its been great for our economy but don't see much effectiveness from these folks.
One point I want to make, the national media has out lived their usefulness. Most haven't heard that there are parts of NO that have power and some commerce is going on. The river has opened back up, some of the ports are up and running. The city will be back, I think sooner than predicted. And I can't keep count the number of reports about having to physically remove residents. From the local officials, they say if they want to stay leave them there. Understand there are some parts of the city that have no damage at all. Sorry to hijack this thread with info that may not be relevant but I can't stand false inofrmation being put out and speculations based on wrong reports.

This has nothing to do with inconvience, this is reality. Do you HONESTLY now, think you could evacuate that freaking city of 480,000 people hours away and take be able to care of them wherever you end up, all in 36 hours?

Honestly now? I can't imagine you could reasonably say yes.

Show me where in the plan was the evacuation which lies physically on the mayor, the actual plan where they're supposed to drive down the street and take them out of the 1 1/2 hour on the highway bowl. Show me. Show me where in the plan they were supposed to be taken. Show me where in the plan what they were supposed to provide for. Show me where in the plan that this is supposed to be done in 36 hours max.

SHOW ME this part of the plan.

So then your argument is; "you wouldn't be able to move all those people, so why even start one bus."

c_c, trafic jams were not keeping people bottled-up in the disaster zone.

We covered this days ago, you shouldn't have any problem finding this info along with the link to the appropriate docs right here on this forum.

The evacuation physical evacuation doesn't lie on the Mayor, ordering it does, as well as placing evacuationplans in motion.

See, there's part of it right there. Someone else had linked to an even more detailed doc that assigned public works employees to staff and drive the busses out of the city in a mass evacuation.
