For the trifecta - "Best shotgun"?
Though it's not fancy, I'm fond of my Remington 870.

TSK TSK TSK.....Parker....Side by Sides are the Cadilliac of American Shotguns....Some might say the Winchester Model 21's are the BEST....
For home defense there is nothing like the Winchester model 97 solid frame Riot or for you military buffs it was aka the "Trench Gun"

Both of mine are pumps...one Wichester, one Remington...barrels are for lead shot only, so I don't use 'em...Used to be great pheasant hunting here in the Valley, but now that the Valley has been Californicated, the best bird hunting is east of the Cascades. Then there is the old antique muzzle loader, damascus barrels, side by side, percussion cap hammers. I wouldn't dream of trying to fire it. Either grandfather's or great grandfather's old gun...

My father has an amazing old Ithaca shotgun. It ejects the shells through the bottom. There is no side breach. Beautiful because both sides are covered in etched hunting scenes. Action works perfectly as long as its kept clean.
My father bought it in the early 1950s with money from his paper route. It was an expensive gun (at least for a working class family) at the time, costing even more because he ordered the etching as an option.

Shotguns hold no fascination for me. They are no more than a tool to hunt with. Since I hunt ducks when I do hunt birds, a cheap reliable pump works for me. My current duck gun is a Winchester 120 in 12 gauge with interchangeable chokes.
I have had some exposure to fine doubles, but don't know all that much about them. I hear the Winchester 21's are about the best there ever was. Holland and Holland has some damn expensive ones, but I'm not sure if that means they are any good. More exercises in gun making by hand than functional pieces? I've heard that accusation. Perrazi trap guns are supposed to be the best. A buddy that actively competes spent about $12k on one. He claims in the end it is the cheapest way to go; his has well over 100,000 rounds through it. He claims he would have used up a dozen lesser guns to get that far. I don't know; it sure doesn't look like $12k worth of anything to me, but like I said, I don't know shotguns. Just a tool to me. Rifles are my first love in firearms; handguns second; shotguns a distant third.

Interesting...I've liked shotguns since seeing Steve McQueen use one in "The Getaway." Sure, it's a shallow, but what the hell...
I also like home protection: This is my old man's weapon of choice, besides his Beretta and Rottweiler: ![]() And he lives in a better neighborhood than I... ![]() |

Jeff a friend of mine was ranked 2nd at one time in Competion Skeet Shooting in CA...he's BIG TIME Safari Club and as we speak he is in Africa on Safari....his choich for Skeet shooting is a Perazzi. However recently he bought a Parker at Ivory Beads in Covina, CA....(it's a great High Grade Shotgun and Sporting Rifle Emporium that harkens back to the old days). He LOVES it, as it gives him a diffrent feel, and swings so nicely. He recently bought a William Moore SXS in 8 Bore that needs restoration. The English Best guns are done the old fashion way, BY HAND.
One thing about English Guns... the wood is left Proud, because it is understood that at the end of a season the gun will be returned to it's maker to be reblacked. As a consequence the appearance of a gun can be deceptive with regards to the amount of wear it has sustained over the years. So one has to be carefull when purchasing old English Shotguns.

Nothing fancy here, and like Jeff, for ducks and geese. I have the Mossberg 500...soo reliable. Also have a Remington 1100 I inherited from my dad, but have yet to try it out hunting or otherwise. Even then, I have so many fond memories with the Mossberg, I don't think I'd switch.
