Now THIS Is Just WRONG!!!

Saw the following article on a website I frequent and my first reaction was that this was some sort of hoax:

DOGS USED AS SHARK BAIT

By IAN HEPBURN

STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun can shockingly reveal. The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where Prince William spent two holidays. A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog above - and another through a leg.

The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line. But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks. The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.

Sooo, I did a quick Google Search and came up with this:

RSPCA Official Site

Urban Legends Debunking Site - It's True!

Snopes

There are some SICK people out there but this has to be some of the worst crap I've seen in a long time.

Randy

Another example of why much of humanity should indeed be exterminated.

I can think of an area where a "huge double hook" can be placed and drag these a*holes around at 30 knots.

Putting King Mackeral out is one thing, tossing a pooch is down right *****'d. Then again, people eat them. I think my son may be on to something - "Dad, I don't eat noth'n with a face!". True.

Never could understand why people fish for shark - they aren't that tasty compared tio tuna or seabass. Is it the fight? Play some 2 on 2 in my driveway and you'll know what fight is.

Sick bastards. Anyone who could do that to a dog would do it to a human with less difficulty.

I think we're all in trouble. There are too damn many of them. Wife beaters, pedophiles, rapists, it's all the same. An utter lack of humanity.

When I see this cr@p, it makes me want to find the perpetrator and do exactly to him as he has done to this poor animal. Or worse, actually. People that do this sort of thing do not deserve to live.

I mean that.

I'd have to highly disagree with that statement. Only because I just bought some the other day to try for the first time. I made a couple of steaks, one for me and one for my girlfriend. I made a marinade of 3 cloves of crushed garlic, an ounce of olive oil, an ounce of soy sauce, a half ounce of sesame oil, a few crusched cubes of crystalized ginger, a teaspoon of sugar, and salt and pepper. after letting it soak, sear it in a pan with a little butter on medium high. for about three minutes a side. it is unbelievable. Best fish I've had at home and the girlfriend agrees.

I hope those islands are not crowded with inbreed morons making it a common behavior - since statistically the malignant form of psychopathic behavior required to be able to execute such horrendous cruelty is rather uncommon in the genetic gene pool.

So much for the trust worthyness of man. It breaks my heart whenever someone mistreats an animal, especially one that only wants to please us and be loved.

I have a hard time believing the picture to be related to this story.
Think about it. If you pulled that pup behind a boat those hooks would rip out of his snout very easily. Even the Snopes article left doubt.

With one point off for misspelling "trustworthiness", I daresay that is the most coherent sentence TABS has ever typed, and certainly the first post of his that I grok. Did the new medication kick in?

While this is really sad and screwed up, I think that dog ate something else that was on that hook. I bet the shark hook is a lot bigger with big barbs.

The Snopes article appears to be the most reasoned look at this very disturbing practice. It does cast a lot of doubt on how wide spread it is and whether the cute pup in the photo is really related to this in any way. Yes, the folks involved, if there is anything to this, are the lowest of low on our evolutionary ladder. Be carefull in jumping to conclusions, as Snopes cautions, however. Some of the folks on the other side of the fisherman/hunter vs. animal "rights" debate are just as low.

As a life-long hunter I have seen the ugly side of the animal rights crusade. It would certainly not be below them to take advantage of an opportunity to use this photo to further their objectives even if it is totaly unrelated to the issue at hand. I'm calling bull***** on the whole thing, at least as a widespread practice, just as Snoipes is hinting. The animal rights crowd certainly gets the desired effect - shock and outrage - when they parade cute pups being abused by cruel men. They really don't care if it is true or not; their objectives go beyond these specific incidents. They are trying to build an image of fishermen and hunters as inheirantly cruel, so that is what the public thinks of when they come to mind. They will flat out lie and misslead to accomplish this public image shift. As more and more folks never get exposed to these pursuits, it becomes easier and easier for the animal rights crowd to pass off their improbable scenarios as fact.

As both a fisherman and dog owner, I understand how quickly my dog would pull that set-up right through her own face, and how nearly impossible it would be to actually troll one like that. If all legs were bound as stated, it would quickly drown anyway. Why even start with a live one and put up with the hassles associated with that? Snopes says they normally pick up dead ones from the ditch. That would be far easier to deal with on board a boat and in setting up to fish with. Anyone that does much fishing would realize this.

So, even if these people are exceedingly cruel, I bet they are also somewhat lazy about all of this and take the easiest route. Why bother with live ones when dead ones are easier to handle and get the same results? It just does not add up, unless you are a PETA member looking for a reaction.
