I'm a live and let live kind of guy. I could give a rat's ass what consenting adults do at home in their spare time. I'll readily admit, though, that the thought of two hairy guys going at it disgusts me. Seeing them kiss, hold hands, make googly eyes at each other, and all that rubs me the wrong way. I won't trample on their rights to do so, but that doesn't mean I can't be disgusted.
More distressing than actually disgusting is getting propositioned. For the life of me I can't figure out why that would happen to a guy like me. I thought there were some kind of signals they looked for. Like when the third base coach is signalling to steal second. Isn't there anything a straight guy can do that definitively says "ladies only"?

Vash, I wish that my gay friends had turned out that way. One gay friend hosted parties with guys and fat chicks, the other hosted parties with just guys. They talked about d*** for a solid hour, then turned to me and said, "Oh, we're sorry, we're sure you don't want to talk about d***, let's talk about p****." Two of them were fondling each other on the couch, and two others were loudly whispering sweet nothings to each other in a corner. I'm sure I've been more uncomfortable, but I can't think when.
David, that's a crazy story. I would not have believed that sort of thing really happened! I've been sleeping in rest areas for 6 or 7 years now, and this is the first time I've ever had anything even remotely strange happen. In all reality, this was really just unnerving; I don't believe there was any risk that anyone would have attempted an abduction or something.

Yeah, this is the honest truth, and perhaps one of the scariest things that ever happened to me. I nearly got sick over the "pawn shop" scene in pulp fiction, it was probably where we were headed.
It was only a few years ago that I told my parents, they're in their late 60's and they freaked out. The rest stop was in Wallingford, CT, which is a somewhat affluent town now. They were stunned.

On July 10, 1980 the body of 49 year old school teacher William Gerald Hodges was found at a Valdosta truck stop fatally wounded by a shot to the mouth and to the shoulder. Later in the night, a Bardstown, Kentucky couple, David N. Hardin, 22, and his wife, Katie Back, 28, were asleep in a rest area off I-75 near Lenox. They had their three children and Hardin's niece in the back seat, and were returning home from a Florida vacation. Witnesses testified that without warning, a man approached and shot Hardin in the back of the head, and then demanded that his wife, Katie Hardin, leave with him. When she refused and screamed for her husband as he lay dying, she was shot in the head.
Several eyewitnesses saw a dark-colored semi pulling an empty yellow flatbed parked in the lot, and saw the driver approach the Hardin's car. The vehicle's description matched the one driven by Alabama truck driver William Putman. He was arrested him in Dooly County at another rest station. When his effects were inventoried at the jail, police found an insurance card, a watch and two rings, all belonging to Hodges. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.13%. Police also found a wallet belonging to Hardin and a .38-caliber revolver under the driver's seat of his vehicle. Ballistics tests confirmed that all three murders were committed with that handgun. Putman also was convicted and was sentenced to life for the murder of William Hodges. William Howard Putman ![]() Executed November 13, 2002 by Lethal Injection in Georgia Final Meal: Three eggs over light, toast, bacon, hash browns, vanilla ice cream and two soft drinks. Final Words: Putman declined to make a final statement.

Alright, Craig, you've made your point. No more sleeping in rest stops. A hotel room is cheap insurance against my life.
Mike, it's right in downtown Niantic, right off 161. You know Constantines? I can see it from my front porch. I could do a lot worse, especially given my poor safety habits of sleeping rest areas...

On a related note...
Have any of you guys ever heard of that cop in Texas that was setting guys up on a rest stop for unfounded charges of solicitation in the men's room. It was some years back. But it turns out that the cop had a brother in law with a bail band business. The cop would go out to the rest stop and arrest guys for solicitation and his brother in law would bail them out. Can you imagine getting jammed up with a unwarranted conviction like that? Prospective job interviews, trying to explain to the wife, etc. I guess the point is, worse things than getting invited to a bj fest can happen out there. Rest stops can be very weird places. My wife camp throughout the summer and we stay in WalMart parking lots while on the road and they are a pretty good deal. Usually there are lots of other campers there. And you are welcome to use their restroom facilities. I like WalMart. Dan

I've parked in "trucks only" areas positioned where the big rigs are watching me all night.

Rest stops are notorious as pickup places for gay men. Was this news to you? Rest stops are no different from bars except they lack the music and beer and smoke. Plus I think some guys like the edgy seaminess of a truck stop. They get to act out a kind of a "living on the edge" fantasy without the danger of actually living too close to the edge. I think they like the fact that rest stops appear to be desolate and scary and yet are mostly relatively safe. It's all pretty harmless and I seriously doubt you were ever in any danger of any kind.
Most of my good friends are gay and I've been propositioned by more men than women in my life. Way more. A simple "No thanks" seems to work about 100% of the time.
