Just found these numbers via Google and added them up on a calculator, 29533 for the 993 from '94-'98 for the USA/ Canada. That's turbo, cab, targa and coupe. Couldn't find 996 numbers.

Lowest price for a used 996 I saw via the dealer was a little over $40K.

Please.

$25 - $30K seems about right...

EDIT: that would be the lowest LA price.

>The GT3 had a dry sump though.

Yes, both the GT3 and Turbo use a dry sump engine, which is a modified water-cooled version of the old 993 engine. It's tough enough to take the extra mods and turbo boost. Those two models are the only '99-newer Porsches that I would own.

Which brings up a very important question:

If the standard 996 engine is as tough as the earlier ones, why didn't Porsche turbocharge that engine? Or trick it out to use in the GT3?

The 996 engine is a wet sump, but it holds around 10 quarts of oil - it essentially has an oil tank cast into the engine. There are some folks who race standard 996s in the Grand Am races. I read on another Board that one of the teams was able to do a whole seaon on one engine.

There is a "motorsports" kit that you can install on 996 enignes. It doesn't add an external oil tank. Instead, it adds an extra oil pickup in such a place that ensures that all of the oil pickups cannot be simultaneously dry, which I guess can happen to stock 996 engines. It's kind of expensive for a kit (~$2,000 if I recall), and it involves sending your heads to Porsche to get a new hole drilled in.
