Should I keep this portable spotlight?
My sister bought me a Thor Cyclops rechargeable portable spotlight with 15 million candlepower for Christmas. I'm not sure why since I have never used a spotlight nor thought "Gee I wish I had 15 million candlepower right now", but she got it. Should I keep it or take it back for something a little more practical? The guy in me says "Dude, a spotlight...sweet!" but the practical part says "That will gather dust for the next 10 years". Thoughts? Pic is below:

Rick, I recently saw this light at a local store. I picked it up and said "Wow"....then I thought "What the hell would I do with this thing?" It's still on the shelf. If you do emergency type work, boating, exploring it might be a bit more practical.
BTW, it looked to have an automobile halogen headlight bulb as the source of it's light.

I love mine! But then I live on a small acreage with lots of trees out back. It really lights things up with that H-4 (?) bulb! Pretty handy for noting the difference between a neighbor's cat or dog and a skunk or a raccoon when I'm wandering about at night with my Browning Challenger loaded with subsonic .22LR.

Have a 1.5MM candlelight spotlight. Only used it when the kids wanted to run around at night - a 15MM would be pretty interesting provided you didn't look into the light.
I'll trade you a case of engine oil for it!

2 million CP can be too much, especially in woods and other areas where visibility is limited. All you see is light.
1M CP is much better in terms of being a daymaker. I'd imagine 15M is good if you want to play lighthouse, but I don't think it would be a good light unless you have serious range. |

I bought a 2.5 million CP light about a month ago. Love it. Deer spotting in my back yard? No problem. Heck, I can even spot the ticks on the deer!
![]() Works well for changing tires in the dark - which is what I typically do for DE's - the usual conversation at the hotel by the track the night before the event goes something like this: "Where's Z-man?" "He's outside changing his tires." "Oh yeah." -Z.

I've found that the battery on these things is good for about 30-45 min depending on ambient temp. I use 'em to bring squid to the boat at night. Mmmm.. calamari.

Unless you plan on joining that citizens border patrol thing, I'd bring it back and invest the money in some of those political re-education classes. I think they have just what you're looking for at a place called Harvard, but Brown will do in a pinch

Harvard....yeesh...gives me the heebie-jeebies...
I'll take my hard earned degree from Texas A&M University over any old Harvard degree...GIG 'EM AGS!!! And I think the spotlight will go back...maybe I can get some new metric wrenches or a mig welder. That'd be cool, then I could....you know...weld stuff.

That's true, Thor works only about 40 minutes on a charge...

keep it...
i worked a scca rally at night and a "hella" rally light fell off a Subaru factory car... came with a little box attached to it.. i attached it to a 12V car battery and i had the worlds biggest flashlight... nothing scatters the little punks TPing the neighbor's house like a megaphone and a light so bright that it makes your skin feel warm 3 feet away... takes about 2 seconds to warm up... but it really shines several hundred feet! ![]()
