Too true. The 911 (has to be a targa or cabrio) is next - and yes, it's really for her. Given that your average decent early 911 is about 10x what I'm paying for this 944 though, I guess there's the primary reason. The 944 is gorgeous, just needs a headgasket and some "it's-been-sitting-too-long" love/maintenance (P.O. didn't know how to DIY). His loss, my gain I guess.

Next xmas I'm hoping to have enough $$$ saved to get her the 911 though. Maybe an SC or somethin'. She's a open-air-ventilation kind of gal.

Still, in the interest of continuing the "love fest" between 911 and 944 owners, I'll just say this:

944: about $3k or so for a decent one. Fantastic handling, good gas mileage, reasonably easy to work on.

951: about $8k or so for a decent one. Fantastic handling, good gas mileage (off boost), difficult to work on, very fast. Easily modded to make obscene performance numbers.

911: about $15k or so for a decent one. Good handling (until the back breaks loose), fair gas mileage, very difficult to work on (depending on model/year), pretty fast.

So while the two cars are "different" they offer similar things in terms of fun. For now, I'm perfectly content with the joy my wasserpumpers give. I think in terms of "bang-for-the-buck" it's pretty hard to beat a '44.

I'll eventually get into the air-cooled world. Just gotta' find that that winning lottery ticket first. . .
